Is the custom of both husband and wife wearing wedding rings the same in the Middle East as it is in the US?

To me it seemed the same...except for one thing. My husband comes from an area that doesn't allow men to wear gold (not even white gold) or stones.

Must be silver. Nothing else seemed different.

Well I have a bad husband! I told him that I refused to get him a gold band and that I would get him a silver, steel, or titanium band, but he said he wanted a white gold/ yellow gold band and went and bought his own. I told him if he wants to send himself to the fire for being stubborn and "in style" then go for it.

Oh #######! now that I think about it! I gave him a chain when we first started dating that was white gold and he still wears it! I gotta tell him not to wear it any more.

It is fairly common in the Middle East for both spouses to wear wedding rings, although it's not something that is absolutely insisted on.

But as has been mentioned, Islam prohibits the wearing of gold or silk for Muslim men (Muslim ladies can go ahead and partake ) Of course, there are some Middle Eastern men who do not concern themselves with such dictates -- and I am certainly not saying that merely violating such a rule will instantly condemn them to be hurled into the fiery pits of hell. But there is a reason for everything in Islam. Personally, I suspect that the idea is to deter men from becoming overly "dandy-ish." Maybe Rahma would be able to come up with some references on this issue.

My husband's ring is also silver, and mine is gold. We had them both engraved on the inside with the same message -- M M Forever.

White gold was originally developed to imitate platinum, and is usually an alloy containing 25% nickel and zinc. If stamped 18 karat, it would be 75% pure gold.

so maybe he's not breaking that rule too much

We both did white gold. DH explained about the silver issue, however since white gold has a silver look to it, it was the right choice for us. He also picked out a celtic design which had me tickled!

Said and I both have white gold engagement bands and will both have white & yellow gold wedding bands - He also wears a silver bracelet - guess we're both condemned! He also bought me a beautiful gold pendant in Morocco w/ "Allah" in arabic script on it. I treasure it. But my daily necklace is a silver khamsa (hand of fatima) w/ turquoise stones in it which he gave me when we first met. Yet another ramble....
