It is valid to Ghana but the US can state what style of passport is good for entry into the US. The want a machine readable passport. If your passport does not have the machine readable format then it isn't good for travel to the US no matter what you can do with it in your home country. Most passports issued since 1980 are in this format . One the bottom of the page with your picture if there is information and lots of <'s and >'s it is probably a machine readable passport. The newest types also have a chip inside that contains an expanded information set. All you need is the one with the <<<>>> data

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

It is the normal process in most places that you get your old passport back when you get a new one. They usually punch a hole or cut the corners of pages. If you don't have an interview yet you have time to get a passport and then you won't have to hassle with it here. Until you are a USC you have to maintain a current foreign passport.

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

They are requiring new passports at the US embassy. Both my parents and my MIL had to get the new ones when they went to get their US visas.
