I think the best thing to do is for someone to go to the DAS in person to ask exactly what they need from the petitioner because on the instructions they have on their web page, no where does it say it has to be notarized. The permission slip only says it has to be signed by the petitioner giving someone else permission to get the DAS certificate for them.

By the way, I just read in the Spanish K1 thread that someone who had their interview recently was not even asked about the DAS certificate, she only had the sealed envelope for her DAS certificate and the CO didn't even open it and handed it back to her with no questions asked. So don't sweat it if your interview is right around the corner and haven't had time to get it for yourself.

I see you are applying for a K-1. It might be because you are not already married.

For the married folks - My wife called the DAS in Medellin this morning and they said that I can fill out the form to request the certificate, write an un-notarized letter authorizing her to request it, and then scan them to my wife. She can then request the certificate with a copy of our marriage certificate and pick up the certificates in Medellin 2-4 days later. I guess we'll see how it actually goes down when she does it...

Good luck!

So they're telling some people that the permission slip/letter needs to be notarized and others that it doesn't. Typical in Colombia.

I am guessing it is partially due to how recent this process started. They told her that my entry/exit report is the first they had to do for a non-citizen of Colombia.

I received my DAS certificate today.. I did not provide a letter. I told my wife that I needed the DAS certificate and she found the requirements (they had a half page handout in the local office of what to do). She called me while obtaining it and asked for the exact date of my last visit.

I asked her to do a quick write-up in Spanish of what she did to get it (this was in medellin):

1. Requisitos para solicitar movimiento migratorio

..... anyway it worked :)

Nice, I saw those reqts also. Do you have a cedula de ciudadania? My cedula de extraneria expired and they said to just bring a copy of the passport. I'll have my wife simply go and do it, thanks for sharing.

Anybody have a thought on the baptismal certificate? I am concerned because my fiancee does not want to travel to get it, and that means she probably won't.

The packet instructions say "Recently issued baptism certificate with marginal notes is required for all

applicants", have you emailed the embassy?

I have a question about the baptismal certificate. My husband got his recently but towards the end it says: "SIN NOTA MARGINAL MATRIMONIAL HASTA LA FECHA." Exactly like that. Bold letters and all in CAPS. We didn't get married in a church so of course it wouldn't show it, but as for the marginal notes...does this mean that they're not necessary since they don't have any? I'm not catholic so I have no idea what it's supposed to mean.

It all depends on the church who issues the baptismal certificate. Some will add the marginal notes to say the person has not been married in the Catholic Church and others will leave it blank to indicate the same. So it doesn't matter which version he got. We got married at a notary in Medellín and my baptismal certificate says the same thing "Sin nota marginal".

Also, the baptismal certificate is a requirement for anyone who was baptized in the Catholic Church. They need this to see if the person has been married or is still married to someone else by looking at the marginal notes. Some people have been married in a Catholic ceremony but never registered their marriage at a notary, so the embassy needs to see this. Some people have said the staff at the US embassy, including the CO did not make a big deal about not having this document available, BUT when we were at the embassy for my husband's interview, there was a lady who misplaced it and couldn't find it. The witch at the embassy reviewing the documents told her that if she didn't find it, she needed to make another appointment for her interview on another day.

So, it's up to you to either risk it or go prepared and take it with you as their instructions indicate.

Thanks for the answers. At least I can now make an argument why she needs to go get a new certificate. She has distant family and friends in that town, so I am hoping she can get one of them to send it to her (if possible). I'll sleep better if I know she gets it!
