School transportation sux. They eliminated buses and sold them to another org for $1. Now, in order for your kid to ride the bus you gotta pay $400-something per kid per year. Sure they have a monthly plan option but the first payment is over $100. Families on the food program don't always have regular transportation and don't have money to pay for the bus. How are these kids expected to get to school?

I'm seeing kids getting hurt or nabbed getting to and from school (no sidewalks). Some parents may even leave their kids @ home alone...potentially thousands won't get an education if this happens. There's not enough police to go door to door to check in on the kids no longer attending school.

I'm seeing kids getting hurt or nabbed getting to and from school (no sidewalks). Some parents may even leave their kids @ home alone...potentially thousands won't get an education if this happens. There's not enough police to go door to door to check in on the kids no longer attending school.

Back in the day when many walked to school how long did it take to get there?

In the township where my son goes to school there are lots of busy streets and no sidewalks outside the newer neighborhoods. So it's risky for the kids for probably a mile radius outside the schools. There's the added paranoia of kids getting snatched too.

I did a Google map route from my ex's house to my son's school. It's about 3-4 miles. Google shows that walking one of their three routes would be from an hour to an hour and a half. I don't know what walking speed they use in their calculations.

I hear ya! I used to take: 5-15 minutes to go to the two elementary schools I attended, 15-25 minutes to go to the two Junior Highs I attended and 15-95 minutes to go to two of the six High Schools I attended that were within walking distance (<3 miles).

I walked also. 5 minutes to elementary / 10 minutes to Middle / 20 minutes to High School...never thought it was a risk at all...but my parents had us in a very good location.

I never walked to or from school....was always at a babysitter or daycare. Once I was allowed to stay at home alone the routes to school were only high traffic. It was scary crossing the street to get to our mailbox during middle school!
