It might not be a satisfactory answer, but some times, we just do things because that's what the Prophet (saws) said. If I had to venture a reason, the people who are exempt from fasting are exempt for health reasons - a travelor because the trip might be exhausting, a pregnant woman for the health of her child and her, a chronically ill or elderly person because it may harm them healthwise. I would suppose that not eating while menstruating may cause health problems as well.

*disclaimer, not a doctor, not a health professional, just my own speculation*

I know that women are not to fast during their period and are supposed to make it up later before next year's Ramadan.. but why? What kind of health problems would arise from fasting while you're on your period? Severe crankiness?

Boy it sure is quiet around here.

It might be a public health issue if I can't have chocolate  I would venture to guess anemia, faintness, dizziness, worsening cramps, etc, but I'm not a doctor.

Boy it sure is quiet around here.

I know, and it's a slowwwwww day at work (thus my pouncing on threads) bored.gif

Unfortunately no. My cooking skills are quite small, outside of hummous and macaroni and cheese

We definately need a pinned food thread!

my sister for example is always in extreme pain during this time. often times she is very weak.

I can understand why.

Medicines used by gargling do not break the fast so long as they are not swallowed. If a person has a tooth filled and feels the taste of it in his throat, this does not break his fast. (From the fataawa of Shaykh ?Abd al-?Azeez ibn Baaz, issued verbally).

Having the ears syringed; nose drops and nasal sprays ? so long as one avoids swallowing anything that reaches the throat.

Tablets that are placed under the tongue to treat angina and other conditions - so long as one avoids swallowing anything that reaches the throat.

Medications absorbed through the skin, such as creams and patches used to administer medicine and chemicals.

I also want to add that my husband said that if it is imperative that you take that medication to save your life then it is excused but if it is something you can go without, then you should try to do without ???? is that right?

Amal, since you referenced shaykh bin baaz in your post then I'll refer you to two sites where some of his and his colleague's fatawa regarding fasting are. He was at one time the head of the Permanent Commitee for Islamic Research and Fatawa.

that which does and does not break the fast On this site you can go to the top of the page under catagories and find other fatawa as well.

I'm sorry if what I said was wrong :crying: ..I actually was quoting what I saw said in another post by rahma (who has always been a good and valid source of information). I'm having a rough time right now with some very personal issues and I may have misread what you wrote so if what you said was good...thanks (F)

I just wanted to help (F)

and to the fasting during the "cycle"...what I was told is that....a womans body is technically not clean during the cycle even if she makes woodoo... I could be wrong so please don't quote me on that....

I didn't mean that you said anything wrong. I was just offering you links to some websites where you can find fatawa from shaykh bin baaz if you respect his opinion. (F)

I believe you are correct about not being 'clean' while we're on our menses and that's why we're not to touch the Quran until after they have gone and we have made ghusl.

I think I'll have to look into that. Thanks for clarifying...I'm not comprehending very quickly today. I love ya VP!
