For people with chronic illnesses, they're exempt from fasting. I know some people with diabetes, and they just pair down to the bare minimum during Ramadan, so they're in the spirit of fasting, even if they're not actually doing it.

I am sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo psyched!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wedding day today!!!!

Got an appointment today with the judge. At 11 am I will be married to the love of my life. We were supposed to be married on the deck over the lake behind the court house. Got up this morning and it is pouring down rain. Rain, rain go away!!!! I guess we will just have to get married inside. Hope everyone has a good day.

this is something I wondered about b/c I'm often anemic and hypoglycemic, so totally fasting for me is sometimes a no-no.... but I'm determined to try! And the pills I take, iron pills and vitamins as well as some adderall - the adderall I could probably do w/o and I guess the iron/vitamins can wait till evening. It's a looong day when the sun doesn't set til abt 8pm!

Is it possible to consult with a doctor? They may be able to offer you some helpful advice, especially if they have some muslim patients, or are muslim themselves.

If you try it and you get sick without it, then you'd probably be exempt from fasting. But, even if you're exempt, still do your best to get the benefits of the month! I can't imagine not being able to fast

And, in Baton Rouge, it looks like the longest you'll have to fast this year is until 7.

I believe the only time a muslim is 'exempt' from fasting... meaning it is not obligatory for him/her to make it up if he/she is unable to complete their fast... is if their illness is one that never goes away or will never permit them to fast or lasts for some extended period of time. In that case, that person can feed poor people instead of fasting but if you're sick, and it's something that will go away (menses, pregnancy, breastfeeding, flu, sickness that comes and goes, etc etc) then I believe what they have to do is make up each day they missed at a later time in the year (before the next Ramadaan).

I, myself, have days that my sugar drops mid-day and I have to break my fast but since I don't have this problem every day, I make it up when I'm able... just get a calendar and mark those days with a red pen so you'll easily be able to keep track of how many you have to make up.

I agree that it's a mercy from Allah that we are not punished if we are unable to complete our fast due to sickness but I don't think I'd go so far as to say it's a blessing to be sick to get out of it. There are many benefits to fasting and many rewards as well. I would be greatly saddened if I were rendered unable to fast for the rest of my life :(

Also, like Rahma has mentioned, if you're not able to fast then you should not neglect other beneficial actions to be taken during this blessed month. Like reading/reciting the Quran, constantly remembering Allah, praying at night, giving charity, feeding the poor, etc etc etc. (F)

Sure you could, but I like to print out the schedule ahead of time and pin it next to my computer at work. Just stick your zipcode in here, click on monthly prayer times, select Ramadan (or September if you prefer) and walla, it's all planned out. Maghrib times signals the setting of the sun :)

So, another "fasting" question.... what is the deal w/ fasting during menses? Are you not supposed to fast while having your cycle? If so, why not?

It's considered like you're sick during that time and it's a mercy on us that we don't have to fast or pray during that time. We don't have to make up prayers but we do have to make up obligatory fasts.
