You'll be fine with your K1, just dont try to hide anything: full disclosure. In the meantime, no harm in applying for your tourist visa, unless your K1 journey is coming to an end shortly.

I always thought on VWP that you had to return to your homeland to reset the clock?

I know when visiting the UK, it's not considered VWP, you get 6 month stay and the clock is reset every time you leave, no matter where you go.

As for the deny, don't believe it will affect the K-1 at all.

Yes, as Anita Cocktail said earlier - jaunting up to Canada or down to Mexico for a day doesn't count toward resetting the clock. They will see this as trying to take advantage of the VWP and deny you entry (which is what happened to the OP).

The CBP website has the instructions for this. The clock is reset when you leave, but in order to stop people from just crossing to Canada or Mexico for lunch and coming back for another 90 days and virtually living in the US on a VWP, these countries as well as Caribbean countries are excluded from reseting the clock. The CBP website isn't clear if going to a country like Costa Rica or Honduras will reset the clock though.

I've even heard of folks going all the way back home (the UK for example) but only staying a week, then being denied entry. The destination doesn't matter as much as how long you're gone, and how the CBP officer perceives your use of the VWP.
