Traveling back to the UK and getting a new passport whilst there?

Hi, sorry if this is in the wrong forum.

I have a question. My daughter and I are about to file for Removal of Conditions next month. In September we are planning to go back to the UK for a week or two. My daughter's UK passport is due to expire in April 2012 - while we are back in the UK can I get a new passport (I would make an appointment to get the passport at the passport office same day)for her without encountering any problems travelling back to the States afterwards with a different passport? Also, if I don't renew the passport would it be a problem with the fact that the UK passport will barely be valid for 6 months we we arrive back in the states? Thanks!

Kirsten

It takes 4 to 6 weeks to get a new passport and 2 to 3 weeks to get it expedited. You have to send your passport to the passport office to get your new one.Hope this helps.

You can get it same day at the passport office in the UK using the Premium One Day Service (In March last year I got mine in 3 hours at the Glasgow office) http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/TravelAndTransport/Passports/howlongittakesandurgentappplications/DG_174149

You can get a new passport through the Washington embassy but when I looked into it it looked like a real pain. http://ukinusa.fco.gov.uk/en/help-for-british-nationals/passports/

I have the same question about getting a new passport next time I am in the UK... Can someone who's had experience travelling one way on one passport and back on the new passport give any advice?? Is this likely to cause any problems?

So long as you do not need to change any of the information on the passport, you should be able to renew it in person with either the one-day or one-week service. The directgov website says, "If you do not live in the UK, you can apply in person for a passport for your child while visiting the UK." and there is no indication there that travelling out with a different passport might be a problem. I can't foresee any problem with entering the US, so long as you all have the letter from USCIS with the one year extension for your green cards. The passport shouldn't be a problem. You will also have your daughter's old passport with you, not that I think anyone will ask why it's different.

If you choose to wait to renew the passport in the US (cheaper than expedited service I presume!) then I don't think that will be a problem either. As a permanent resident, it is her green card that gives your daughter access to the US. The passport validity is a concern for those travellers who are expected to leave the country after a defined period of time: if their passport will expire then they won't be able to leave so that is why it is an issue on entry. But your daughter can live in the US and not have a valid passport, so there is no need for it to be valid beyond the day of travel, even.

Make an appointment on the call help line. They will mail you a letter outlining what you need to bring for your appointment.

I got mine last time I was home. No hassle at all. The worst part was going through security. Take as little as possible with you for the appointment as they have the machine really finely set and everything triggers it - jewelery, keys etc. :)

Thanks for the responses. Has anyone else been in a situation like this with success?
Lots of the Canucks (and this erstwhile Canuck) have been in the analogous situation (needing to renew expiring passport when visiting "home").

Thanks for the responses. Has anyone else been in a situation like this with success?

I went back to Aus on maiden name passport and flew back in on married name passport. It was an entirely different number on my passport. I had ZERO issues. It matched my GC (finally) and no-one even mentioned that it had changed. I assume that there's details on my previous passport on the chip in my new passport but even then it's just the GC they care about. No stress. My ONLY stress was making sure it was done in time, there was no 24 hour service. They didn't accept my US marriage cert so I had to do an official change of name and THEN change my passport. Luckily I was home for 2 months so I got it about 2 weeks before I needed to fly back to the US.
