Immigation lawyers (Name & shame them)

For the last 2 years or so since I've been on Visajourney, I have to say I'm surprised and disgusted that so many people have had problems with 'SO' called immigration lawyers.

Now I'm sure there is good lawyers out there but it seems people come on here to get better answers or reliable advise, cause their lawyer botched up somewhere a long the line, whether it's a small mistake or a biggy.

I have seen certain threads that members have had their case denied or on hold for months, all because the lawyer didn't do their job correctly.

Is it a good thing or not to name these immigration lawyers or at the very least should VJ members be given the option to give some sort of feed back on them?

I have not needed to use them, but I did call a lawyer over 3 years ago cause at that time I knew very little about immigration, but he did sort of tell me I could just come over on the VWP, marry then AOS. Just as well I didn't take his advice.

And yes, If I remembered who he was, I would be naming him here now.

Not sure that naming them is appropriate but those needing an immigration lawyer absolutely MUST look at the credentials of the attorney and basically interview him before hiring...making sure they know and understand the immigration process. You can ask about how many cases they have for immigration (what percent of all his cases are immigration etc) and look them up im sure somehow on the state bar association to see if they are still licensed and basically do your homework on this....

You wouldn't go to a medical doctor to perform heart surgery just because he places an AD on the web would you? Why trust immigration attorneys the same way....

I think taking the heart surgeon advertising on the web a bit far. No, wait a minute, I think I will call that heart surgeon on craigslist to see if he can do a quick job on the side.

I'm talking about VJ members who have had simple or major complications with their lawyer.

And why not name them or give feed back? Members give feed back on other issues, whether it's a POE or interview based. Why not lawyers?

If I gave a lawyer lets say $2000 for a simple K1 or AOS and they screwed up, whether it was a check mistake or not filing correctly, I would be welllllll pissed and I would fire their #### on the spot.

It might be against the TOS to post the names and such.

I am sure that some of these lawyers irriate immigration. Wish I knew the ones who worked along good with USCIS and who were jerks. My lawyer has all the necessary qualifacaitons and advised me correctly when I recieved a 4 page RFE. but who does USCIS respect and help? Certainly not us.

you would be surprised at the number of ppl who actually get visa attorneys off the websites that say we can guarantee your visa...or from phone book just cos they say immigration

im not saying life and death is just like an immigrant visa but at the same time your talking about being able to live the rest of your life with your family...thats HUGE!!!!!! ... im also saying the ppl that have got to do all their research and not hire someone just because it says immigration specialist...

and yeah i do think its in violation to post names here

He didn't say anything about slander, he was talking about people sharing their experiences with bad or incompetent lawyers. The truth cannot be slander, as long as the bad experience is truthful its fine. HOWEVER the first amendment only applies to the US government, a private website can make whatever kind of rules they want.

You missed my point

My point is, on a private website how are we to determine what the 'truth' is. I could say I am an 80 your old woman with a fake leg....are you in a position to call me a liar? Someone could share an 'experience' with a lawyer and how are we to tell if it is the truth?

With stuff like this, it is always best to err on the side of caution.

And the 1st Amendment applies to EVERYONE - not just the government. And yes, slander (and libel for that matter) can be policed on a PUBLIC website. This is why gossip mags get sued by celebrities - for printing falsehoods.

Good luck

The most surprising one and funny post I have ever seen was by a lawyer asking the forum how to file the paper work for his client, for which he was going to charge his client.

I would not mind shaming the lawyers who take the ppl for ride. Same time would be good for ppl to know who are the good lawyers who can help them on the case.
