Hi Everyone,

I applied for my social security number about 2 weeks ago, the lady at the office said that she had to send a reminder to Immigration as they hadn't done what they need to do in order to issue my SSN. She told me that I should receive a letter in the mail in 7-10 working days. I didn't receive anything so I called the Social Security office to check what was happening. Apparently what ever Immigration need to do still has not been done and my SSN won't be issued until Immigration do what they need to do. Can anyone shed any light on this? Also, is there anyone else I can call to try and move the process along? I really want to start my AOS paper work, however, I can't be put on my husbands bank account with my SSN and I really wanted to send proof of joint accounts with the AOS paperwork.

Thank you in advance for any help or advice.

I would just go ahead and send in your AOS paperwork while you wait for the SSN. At our AOS interview we were not asked for any additional information. The questions asked were straight off the application form just to prove the information we put on the application was correct. We had no joint bank accounts or anything else when we submitted the AOS package. Remember that you can file the AOS right after getting married so the USCIS does not expect too much evidence of joint accounts at this stage. IMHO I think the amount of evidence required to prove a bona fide marriage depends on several factors and we do not know what all those are otherwise the scammers would do those so they can get the GC. Now for the ROC phase more comingling should have taken place as most married people combine their lives together the longer they live together.

SSA must have looked in the SAVE database and you are not in it and then they will send in a request for information and if that does not work they will send in a form based request to verify your immigration status. All this will take time, time you can use to get the GC. Once you have the GC you can go to the SSA and get your SSN without too much trouble. The GC is the holy grail in this process because once obtained other things become much easier plus you are now authorized to work  .

Good luck in obtaining your SSN--I know that was one phase I was not looking forward to and it went smoothly.

I did eventually get my SSN...can't remember the exact time line but I would say probably about 6 -7 weeks after my first application. However, first application was not pending for more than a few weeks. My local office called me and told me that I had been denied because I had to wait to get my Green Card to apply for a SSN. I knew this was incorrect so I got I found an email address for what I can only assume is the "Head Office" got the confirmation via email and phone that I was correct and should have no issue getting a SSN. I went back to my local office and after some persuasion she applied again for my SSN and I was accepted on their system right away and received my card about 2 weeks later.

I don't know the exact sequence of events, but I have been told that Immigration (or someone to that capacity) has to update the system to say that you are "legal" before the SS office can issue a card, and until the system is updated you could be pending...or something to that degree.

Good luck
