Al Gore praises Mitt Romney on climate

Mitt Romney on Wednesday got a big thumbs up for his stance on global warming from a source that likely won’t help him at all in the GOP primary: Al Gore.

The former vice president and Nobel Prize winner praised Romney for not heeding right-wing calls to reject the science behind climate change.

“Good for Mitt Romney — though we've long passed the point where weak lip-service is enough on the Climate Crisis,” Gore wrote on his blog. “While other Republicans are running from the truth, he is sticking to his guns in the face of the anti-science wing of the Republican Party.”

Earlier this month, Romney told a New Hampshire town hall meeting that he believes climate change is happening and that man-made emissions are a cause.

"I don't speak for the scientific community, of course, but I believe the world is getting warmer, and I believe that humans have contributed to that," Romney said. "I can't prove that, but I believe based on what I read that the world is getting warmer.

"No. 2, I believe that humans contribute to that," he continued. "I don't know how much our contribution is to that, because I know there's been periods of greater heat and warmth than in the past, but I believe we contribute to that. And so I think it's important for us to reduce our emissions of pollutants, of greenhouse gases, that may well be significant contributors to the climate change and global warming that you're seeing."

who is Al Gore?

Well, you're obviously not a hard core Republican. Al Gore is the man whose endorsement will put the nail into the coffin of any GOP primary candidate. Watch for Mitt to hear about this praise from ole' Al over and over and over from his fellow Republicans over the next few months. This might just trigger another flip-flop by Mitt. The flip-flop could be survivable - he's all loaded up on those already anyways - but Al's support is not.

The grim reaper

Yes, essentially.

So was it my question about Al Gore that tipped you off, or was it my support of Gay marriage, legalized marijuana and pro-choice opinion?

I contend that none of us knows who the nominee will be yet.

Who is gonna beat Mitt?

I mean he might lose against Obama (about a 50/50 chance) but I really don't see Cain/Palin/Bachmann/Gingrich surpassing him anytime soon.

Well, 50/50 is not quite what it is: 49/43 at current - worse for Mitt when you look at the electoral college numbers.

So was it my question about Al Gore that tipped you off, or was it my support of Gay marriage, legalized marijuana and pro-choice opinion?

Okay, good point.

I agree. Romney is the best chance the Republican Party has in winning back the WH. He can win the nomination, but watch and see how the RWN's of the party will try to drag him through the mud.

You've named the not-serious no-chance crowd. Don't forget Santorum in that set.

You haven't listed the other potentially serious candidates, and there are a few: Pawlenty is one. Huntsman will very shortly be another. Perry is looking more and more like he might enter and so may Giuliani. They're both borderline serious. Not as crazy as the completely loonie set, but not quite respectable either.

It's a short, a very short list. It does contain Romney, but it's not only Romney.

It's a sad world when Gingrich becomes derided as non-serious or as having no chance. The man is brilliant albeit eccentric and has frequently bucked the party orthodoxy. A proven ability to think outside the box is needed in today's world and Newt has more than demonstrated it (and paid the price for it too).
