My co-workers and I talked about this on day one. I work in the nuclear industry and also have worked with many other hazardous materials. I met a guy 2 years ago that did air sampling around the WTC site(he worked for New York State). He said the air was 'f#cked'. High levels of asbestos to start with.

I also have warn just about every type of respirator available (from APR to SCBA). Dust masks are useless. The minimum I would have used is a half mask. But you can't wear any for an extended period comfortably so people take them off and you get exposed.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

It is indeed sad and also important to remember the tragedy extended well beyond the event. Families of September 11 have been working hard over the last five years to get this in the news- here's a good resource-
