Hello everyone,

I hope that everyone is doing well and having a great day.

I need help with filling the application for my son who is over 18 years old. He is eligible to apply for the citizenship based on 5 years of permanent residence-Green Card.

Could you please help me with what do I need to put in the following parts of the N-400 application?

Part 3, section F: Are either of your parents U.S. citizens?

I am a Green Card holder and my husband is a U.S. citizen based on birth. My son was not adopted by my husband.

Part 6, section A: Where have you lived during the last five years? List every place you lived for the last five years.

My son goes to in-state college, he lived in the dorm for the fall and spring semesters, moved back home in summer. College is located in the same city and the same state he lived before he went to college. We, his parents never moved. Does he need to list the dorm (college address) along with his home address?

Part 10, section A, question 4. Since becoming a lawful permanent resident, have you ever failed to file a required Federal, State, or local tax return?

My son is a college student and he never had enough income in order to file taxes himself. We, parents, declared him as dependant in our tax returns.

The only answers are available Yes or No, do we need to provide an explanation for this question?

Thank you in advance for your help.

I have the same situation with my daughter who is over 18

Hello everyone,

Could you please help me with what do I need to put in the following parts of the N-400 application?

Part 3, section F: Are either of your parents U.S. citizens? I think he answer's NO since neither you nor his bio dad are(I'm assuming)I am a Green Card holder and my husband is a U.S. citizen based on birth.

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, I think students list their parent's address as their main...the instructions may clarify that

I am unsure on this one as well - I was told I need to file her tax returns every year even if she didn't earn any income so I am in the process of doing that...hopefully I heard wrong about that

Thank you in advance for your help.

All good questions. Let me answer them.

Part 3, section F: Are either of your parents U.S. citizens?

Since you are not a US citizen and the boy's father is not a US citizen, the answer is "No."

Frankly, it doesn't really matter, and I'm usually very ####### retentive when it comes to accuracy. He can list his college dorm's address or not. It also depends a bit on whether or not he filed an AR-11 for address change to USCIS. If he didn't, I wouldn't bother with the dorm address, especially as it's in the same town and he also lives with you. If he filed an AR-11, sure, you'll have to list the dorm's address.

The answer is "No." As a student without enough income, he was not required to file a tax return. Thus, he did not fail to file a required tax return.

Finally, and I've stated that before: do not fill out this form for your son. Either let him do that, or you'll need to fill out the bottom of the form where it asks the applicant who signs the form if anybody else helped with it. Now that's important.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

Hello Lara,

How are You. Base on my knowledge on part 3? are either of your parents US citizen. like You said since he is not legally adopted by his/her second father. You have to put NO.

On part 6? for the last five years address lived. Absolutely Yes Write it down all addresses Your Previous and Preset but You should write the present address First then so on..

on part 10? Once You pay Taxes Don't matter how big or small you would get.You can never failed to file a tax at the end of the year. You said he never had enough income . meaning Your son will get paid by cash? other means NO tax deduction.. if something goes like this... he would never have a problem.. Then Put NO.
