I love how some male posters have discovered "feminist " side to defend Michelle Bachmann.

There's really no reason why her candidacy should be treated with any less derision than, say, Al Sharpton or Pat Robertson, but clearly certain right wing men believes she should have special treatment.

It's because people have been trained by piss poor partisan news media and its attendant talking heads to accept the idea that everything can be relativised - no matter how ridiculous. Hence attacking Bachmann for her fundamentalist political philosophies or her batshit theories about homosexuals and intelligent design becomes sexist. Never mind that the arguments against her are not directed against her gender, but against things she has actually said and done.

The people advancing these arguments are as puerile as they are stupid.

Either that, or Gary has an entire fap folder filled with images of her.

No, I don't. Where did you get that idea? Anyone vying for the Oval Office is taken apart and subject to review of every aspect of their life, everything they ever said, anyone they ever associated with, etc. It's equally tough for men and women. Obama didn't exactly have a cake-walk to either the nomination nor the oval office. He had to get past a good bit of flak on his way to 1600 Penn Ave. And women (Hillary and Sarah) were dishing out just as much as men. Michele Bachmann hasn't been holding back dishing out either. But she now needs to be handled with greater care than she would ever afford her opponents? Sounds like a double standard to me. Are you suggesting that women can't stand up to as much scrutiny and heat as men? I like to consider women much more like equals.

tell that to the media. it's been a mud throwing contest every time.

Yes, and mud is thrown at candidates male and female and - more importantly - by candidates male and female alike. Michele Bachmann hasn't exactly stayed out of the business of throwing mud - in fact, she's been doing so quite heavily and continues to do so quite heavily. Try as you may, you can't reasonably claim that she's treated any harsher than other candidates of either gender past and present have. And you certainly can't claim that she's shown any restraint in dishing it out.

I don't understand what makes you think that her gender has anything to do with the criticism levied against her candidacy.

The pattern is that anyone who runs for White House Office attracts a lot of attention and publicity, not all of it good. Some of it is justifiable, some of it isn't.

If there is a pattern of specifically sexist or misogynist criticism of female candidates, that would be one thing. Of course such things can be demonstrated quite easily... like how a lot of the criticism of Obama during the election was racially motivated.

These are the only candidates for President that had mud thrown at them? Is that what you're saying?

i'm sure you saw some of the things said about hillary on this site during said election. and how palin has been constantly attacked by the media since the election.

search back about 30 years and you'll find similar stuff on ferarro.

Another one of these epic fails on your part, Chuck. This is becoming an ugly pattern with you lately. Let me try to make it very clear to you:

Any person that runs for the Office of President will get a lot of headwind. Mud is thrown at them, accusations are made that have no basis in fact whatsoever. This is what happens. To men and women seeking the highest office alike.

Obama was accused of palling around with terrorists, being a Muslim manchurian candidate bent on destroying the US, not being born in this country in the first place and the list goes on and on and on. Does that mean that Obama is a female? He would have to be if your claim has merit.

What about Kerry? Bush? Clinton (Bill, that is)? McCain? They're all women? I remember the smears they were facing when running for the office. It was ugly.

I remember a fair few of the attack pieces on Hillary - you posted them.

The issue, surely, is the nature of the criticism. Not the quantity.
