Indeed - you wonder why anyone bothers with disaster relief at all. Let 'em freeze, starve, drown, burn.

Heck its all about making 'responsibility' cover every instance of existence. I wonder if this should also cover thinking.

Excellent logic going on there, slim. I can only imagine I am responsible for the tornados, hurricanes, thunderstorms, and lightning that strike people with fury.

The rest is a typical selfish rant of someone that perhaps belongs about 6-7 centuries in the past. Perhaps you should read the more realistic dialogue charles and I are having.

Water spouts for floating homes too.

Actually he's made some very good points. First off our tax payer dollars are going to waste and it's starting to hurt seeing how this country is broke. The US can no longer afford to subsidize blood suckers.

People need to learn to start being responsible for themselves. If you live in a flood plane, then get flood insurance. Here in Alaska we have some strict building codes, especially in regards to earth quakes. It's time for this country to cut some dead weight.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

Read back to my exchange with charles: that would be a little more realistic. Its no time to act like a 15th century puritan seeking to punish anyone for the choices they make if they don't have ample choice to sustain their existence.

You aren't responsible for them so why are you responsible for paying for them?

If you'd like to help, then do so. But, why are we forced to help?

Sorry I'm not a socialist. I'd love to be one but in order to have true socialism everyone needs to pull their own weight. That can't happen here and since it won't, I can't support it.

6-7 centuries in the past would be interesting. Not too many socialists around at that time!

Indeed - you wonder why anyone bothers with disaster relief at all. Let 'em freeze, starve, drown, burn.

Exactly!

Since we're not 6-7 centuries in the past and we're obligated to help everyone today there are agencies out there that folks can volunteer and/or donate to in order to help those affected by disasters and the like. I have no objection to that at all. What I'm objecting to is using federal tax dollars to fund relief efforts. Why should my hard-earned money here in Ohio go to welfare recipients displaced by a hurricane in New Orleans? Louisiana should figure that out for themselves and if they can't pay for those "deserving people" to have their communities rebuilt, perhaps they'd move somewhere a little less disaster prone.

It can't cover thinking. But, it's interesting to note thinking alone won't pay the bills. It's like sitting there all day and hoping someone brings you food. Hope isn't a course of action. You can think (or hope) whatever you'd like but at the end of the day, DOING is what matters.

Problem is, many aren't DOING anything. They're HOPING the rest of us will continue to take care of their lazy asses. I think we should stop.

Oh here we go again... lets nitpick with slimsense.

If your definition of Socialism is the Government helping its citizens in their time of need, then by all means, I believe all sane humans should be socialists.

Speaking of federal help by state, you should reexamine how Federal Tax dollars from more producing states are going to your state to maintain your state- and I'm not talking about welfare or disaster relief. ;)

But back to disaster relief, I think you're just being silly being so damn selfish. Always putting things to the level of black and white / responsible and not responsible. If reality worked this way, our species would probably have gone extinct eons ago- but the lingering gray area genes stuck with us, giving us both those cases you cite of freeloaders as well as those that think that all people that don't have disaster insurance in the same way.

But feel free to lobby for change all you want. Get Why Me to join you too.

Don't bother with the fire service - just let it burn.

Don't bother with the police - if you are the victim of a crime, it's your fault.

Don't bother with hospitals - if you get sick, you aren't worth keeping around.

That is the same logic.

With that attitude why did they bother to send firefighters or the police to the WTC? They should have just said '** em'.

Firefighters and police are LOCAL govt. agencies. My quarrel here is with a FEDERAL govt. agency. See the difference? Wanna try again?

If it was simply a time of need I wouldn't have as much of a problem with it. However, anything the government does goes on way too long, costs way too much money, and ends up building a pattern of dependency.

I'd be really mad if I was them! I'm mad enough and my state is in nowhere near as bad shape as some of theirs.

See above. Local vs. federal. Very simple, really. Please try again.

Socialism exists no matter at what level a government is at. Local vs. Federal is a different argument.
