I have a UK player and a TON of dvd's, as most of our dvd collection are region 2, it makes sense to bring the player with me.

I was just wondering, will a standard travel adapter work ok to convert it to American voltage???

The adaptor will work for the power. What are you going to watch the movies on, though? You'll either need to bring a PAL compatible TV with you, or you'll need to buy a PAL/NTSC compatible TV when you get here. Unless, of course, your DVD player can automatically convert PAL to NTSC.

Confused yet?

Besides voltage and region difference you will have a problem with video standard. In the states TV sets work on the NTSC standard this determines the number of scan lines, and refresh frequency. In the UK the standard is called PAL. So if you can power the DVD player it still wont work with American TV set due to the difference between PAL and NTSC. You could watch them on a computer, but be aware the region code can only be changed a set number of times on the computer's DVD drive then it will lock the code.

I also watch UK DVD's here, My DVD player is a multi standard player has additional systems that convert PAL to NTSC internally, but is limited to playing Region 0 and 1 DVD's. In order to play region 2 disks, I use a program called DVD shrink to copy the DVD's to back-up DVD disks the back up disks have the region code removed. The copies are still PAL and need to play either on a computer, or on my multi standard DVD player.

My dvd player is multiregion so im guessing there wont be any problems in the dvds working. We already have a bunch of UK dvd's there that work just fine, on my husbands multi region player. We just thought it would be nice to have another dvd player in the house.

It was more if a travel adapter would do the trick....thanks :)

The UK has 240 volts. The USA has 120. So, the power is only half of what you need, unless you can get a step-up transformer in the US. That might well cost as much as a brand new US voltage DVD player. I would recommend you leave yours at home and buy a new multi-region one in the US. As LisaD says, they are cheap as chips here !

My DVD player was $25, Amazon, not worth the hassle.

<pedantic physicist>Voltage is not Power, Power = Voltage multiplied by Current</pedantic physicist>.

Still that said, I'm with the others here, leave the DVD player behind, it won't do you any goodd here. Pick up a cheapo hackable DVD player for $35 at Wal-mart when you get here. ;)

Very true BUT being the total computer geek that i am i have a small piece of software that releases the DVD codes on your PC.. PM me if you want it and ill send it over :D

I have 2 DVD players - one to play European DVDs, the other to play American DVDs. Expensive way to do it, but it works.
