International Drivers License - Can I Use?

Last time I was in the US (on a tourist visa) I brought an international drivers permit issued by the AAP (Philippine counterpart of the AAA). This permit is supposedly valid for one year. When I arrive in the US on a K-1 visa, would I still be able to use this permit while waiting for a local license?

Dec 05, 2011: Received U.S. permanent resident status (AOS based on K-1 visa)

Dec 16, 2013: Removal of conditions on green card

Apr 28, 2015: Became a U.S. Citizen

It depends on the state law where you will live. Some states require a state-issued license to drive within a certain (usually short - 10 to 30 days) period of time of becoming a resident of that state. Unfortunately, what the particular state considers state residency and what the Federal government considers Legal Permanent Residency are two different things yet it is (usually) impossible to obtain a state-issued license without at least an EAD from the Federal government (for a K-1, that is).

Most likely the answer is 'No' beyond those initial few days but having a license already should make the process smoother once you are eligible for the state license. No learner's permit, etc...

The best thing you an do is research the requirements of your particular state.
