First off, I would like to thank everyone on VJ for all there help over the past 5 years. My husband and I were very fortunate to have your guidance throughout our whole immigration process.

We had to be at the courthouse at 11.30am. We got there at 11am. Going through security was worse than going through the airport. A family of 6 in front of us, who couldn't understand English, kept setting off the alarm and the security guard kept trying to tell them to take off their jewelry. We finally got through security and up to the 8th floor by 11.20am. There was a long line in front of us. At 11.35am the court room door opened and everyone went in. They were runnning out of seats and asked that only the people to be naturalized could be allowed in out of the remaining crowd. Everyone else would be let in shortly. Luckily my husband and I got a seat together.

One by one the USCIS officer called us up in non-alphebetical order to hand in our green card, our Oath cermeony letter and sign our certificate. Then we were handed a white packet and told were to sit. One of the court officers explained how the ceremony would go. We had to practice standing with our right hand raised and say the last part of the Oath of Allegieance. Then they had those sitting in the back row of the jury seats practice the standing up and saying your name and nationality.

At 1pm, the judge came out. She introduced the USCIS officer who went to the podium. She then addressed the judge and said how there was 61 applicants from 26 countries, who are approved of good moral character and are eligible to be naturalized. One person never showed up and she requested that they be moved to a ceremony at a later date. The Judge grants the request. There are 20 people requesting name changes which have the appropriate paperwork. The Judge grants the request. The USCIS officer then would like to introduce us to the Judge and starts saying our names one by one, and we each stand and say our name and country of nationality after our name is called. Then the Judge says application for Naturalisation granted, you are all US CItizens now and starts clapping. Everyone in the courtroom clapped and I let out a small cheer, lol. :lol:

All of us being Naturalized had to stand and say the Oath of Allegiance. Then the whole courtroom had to stand and face the flag and say the Pledge of Allegiance.

The Judge introduced 4 guests in the courtroom who had gifts for us in honour of the ceremony. She then gave a speech about how important we are to the country and how we probably know more about United States history than most born Americans, lol! After 10 minutes we went up row by row to get our certificate and shake hands with the Judge and the 4 guests. One of the guests said to me its great to see someone with a big smile. I was thinking who isn't smiling? The 4 guests gave us a small American flag, the voter registration form, a letter from our Senator and a letter from our Representative.

If you wanted a picture with the Judge afterwards, you just had to stay behind. Surprisingly only 5 of us stayed behind to get a picture with the Judge. I triple checked my certificate to make sure everything was correct. We were leaving the courthouse at 1.50pm.

I was extremely surprised to see 4 people there to take the Oath and had interpreters with them. I guess I thought you had to be able to fully speak, read and write English to gain citizenship.

My husband and I had a fabulous day and am very glad that we are finished with the immigration process.
