I came as K1, got ss number, got married, applied for AOS, abandoned it. Now we are going to live in the UK for a while then i will return to USA as ir-1...return date will be hopefully one day after our second wedding anniversary so i will get a ten year green card on entry....

Does anyone know whether i will need a new ss number or do they live forever ?

thanks

The Social Security Administration (SSA) does not delete, destroy, rescind, inactivate or cancel Social Security numbers once they are assigned.

If you forgot the number and/or lost your card contact the London Federal Benefits Unit (FBU) to obtain the number and request an SSN Verification Printout to give you some proof of your assigned number until you can be issued a replacement card.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) has entered into agreements with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Department of State (DOS) for those agencies to assist SSA by collecting as part of the immigration process the information SSA needs to assign Social Security numbers and issue SSN cards. DHS electronically forwards the data to SSA once the person is admitted to the United States (U.S.), to assign Social Security numbers and issue SSN cards. SSA calls this data sharing process Enumeration at Entry (EAE).

RM 00202.315 Enumeration At Entry:

http://policy.ssa.gov/poms.nsf/lnx/0100202315

Individuals age 18 or older applying at a foreign service post for an immigrant visa and alien registration, i.e., completes the Form DS-230 Application for Immigrant Visa and Alien Registration, should answer “yes” to the questions 33a and 33b on the form if he or she wants an SSN assigned or replacement card issued.

The individual should receive his or her original or replacement SSN card within 3 weeks after arriving in the United States. The SSN card will be mailed to the same United States mailing address that is used to mail the Permanent Resident card (I-551).

Still check off on the DS-230 that you want a replacement card, since I assume you now have a restricted SSN card and as a permanant resident you can be issued an unrestricted card.

Unless you are receiving benefits or have applied for benefits SSA doesn't keep a record of your address. Just go into any SSA office with your documents if the replacement card isn't receive after being in the country 3 weeks.

oh right yes my original card will say 'no right to work'--forgotten about that- i am retired but if someone wants me to mow their lawn for 10 dollars i might as well have an unrestricted card ..yes it can be a replacement on the ds-230 and it asks for my existing number - good that means i won't end up with 2 numbers...that would be a big problem when asking to reactivate my USA visa card ! hooray well that clears all that up phew- when I entered originally. they spelled my name wrongly at point of entry and mdyoung helped me to get a card by quoting the regulation about one letter spelled wrongly being ok - so i don't want to go through all that rigmorole again ! that is a relief - ok off to worry about something else now...

thanks again people

If your USC spouse is leaving the US, you might want to look into keeping bank accounts that you already have....

Look up "domicile".

Yes thats my next worry - i am just starting to edge into that---I will certainly ask her to keep her bank account and credit card open > they might be prepared to have a foreign address, but if not she will change it to her mother's address in Milwaukee but ask for no mailed statements and she can just check the account online..(confidentiality !)
