Affidavit-notarized or not?

We are getting ready to submit our packet for I-751. I need something clarified: do affidavits need to be notarized or is it sufficient for the person just to sign the letter? On this forum, it says both-during one part says notarized but in another part it says signing is enough. Can someone please clarify?

Also, can a relative write an affidavit or is it better to acquire these from friends?

Keep in mind a notary verifies signatures on a document & has nothing to do the content. Since no one would know the people signing these affidavits its serves no purpose to notarize them.

An affidavit is simply a letter indicating personal knowledge of a subject. Who should write them is dictated by the subject matter.

We had four of our close U.S. citizen friends each write an affidavit. The affidavits weren't notarized - they just put their name and contact information down including their SSN and noted in the letter that they can be contacted any time for further questions with the provided contact information.

This is my old VJ account : S.Fu + T.Fu (http://www.visajourn...le.php?id=67600). Forgot my old log in info - so created this new one.

Goodluck!

Based on the I-757 instructions, I surmised that a signed affidavit is sufficient. It seems, however, than unlike any of the other supporting documents, they do need the original, not a copy - so I am planing on including original.

My question - the form instructions make it sound like it's required to have at least 2 affidavits. I have only obtained 1, and really prefer not to have to ask friends for more. I have pretty extensive financial, etc. evidence, so am not worried about my evidence being thin. Based on what I am seeing, it seems many people did not include affidavits at all and were fine. It is just odd, though, that the USCIS instructions, at least on their face, seem to require inclusion of such. Do you all think it would be problematic if I only send 1 affidavit?

If many people did not bother to include affidavit(s), but were approved, then I don't think that sending one will cause a problem.

Best of luck...

I think what you have probably wouldn't require an affidavit. Substantial evidence like joint tax returns, mortgages, joint utilities, joint ownership of vehicles, etc. all carry heavier weight according to the thread pinned to the top.

I only sent the affidavits because I was lacking in things due to financial hardship in 2008 and 2009.

We made an info-pass appointment to USCIS office here in SF last March to verify they had our correct address. While we were they, we asked the officer what documents we should submit along with the I-751. Since we have a son, he said submitting our son's birth certificate, joint bank accounts, electrical bills, joint tax transcripts, and affidavits from family would be enough.

we just submit ours, and included 2 notarized affidavits from friends. It's not really a requirement, but we want to make sure we got all covered, in case our paper goes to a picky one. Goodluck on your application!
