Certainly.

A silverback

I was under the assumption that one of the reasons the UN was created was to help prevent such crimes as genocide.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

That's kind of like saying police forces were invented to prevent crime and because crime still exists, we don't need cops.

What has the UN done to help in regards to stopping genocide?

You could have just posted...;"The UN has done about zero in regards to helping to stop genocide."

One of the reasons, not the only one. The world isn't black and white, neither is the UN. You shouldn't think that it is.

How many people have been slaughtered since the creation of the UN ?

The UN is only as potent as it's members allow it to be. It's not ever going to be the institution that can or will address all the world's ills. It's neither designed to do nor has it been created to do that. It's been created following WWII to give nations avenues other than all out war to resolve their issues. Since it's creation, there has been no war on the scale of either WWI or WWII and that would suggest that the institution does serve a valid purpose.

Funny how those that want to give the UN the least authority are the same that want to complain the loudest about it's lack of influence.

What's been the biggest deterrent of World Wars since 1945 ? Not the UN by any means.

Try this one for size... NUKES.
