the pigheaded nature of the offensive posts
A hearty +1 to Bob's excellent post, but I believe that the heads of pigs have been insulted here, si man. It is perhaps only a matter of time before their other body parts are similarly dumped upon...

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

So I've been cogitating a little bit on the TOS (hey, I'm a lawyer, and it's interesting to me) and I'm just wondering about a couple of things in there, which I have in this very sub-forum wondered about before in days gone by. Is it or is it not a violation of the following clauses of the TOS on "Permited Uses" when certain prejudicial stereotypes about women of particular nationalities are regularly trotted out on a near-daily basis?

As a woman, and as a woman of the demographic against which mud is thrown frequently in certain areas of this site, I can say that I feel very uncomfortable reading some of the things posted. Now, you can all go and tell me to be a big girl and not read these things, but the sentiment leaches into other, more general areas of the site. It creates a hostile environment on VJ as a whole, and it seems that by not trying to contain this behaviour, that the moderation and administration silently endorse such language. It is hate language.

Wait, let me say that again. It is hate language. It's not clever and it's not funny. It makes this place seem like some sort of boys' club, where women are either to be ogled (if conforming to one particular brand of beauty) or discussed in the most offensive terms. It's bullying behaviour. Sorry, it is.

I'm ready for the vitriol to roll in from the usual suspects, and guys, I don't give a damn if you think I'm a harpy or bitter or ugly, because I know I'm not and I'm secure in that. I'm more concerned about the other, silent women on here who read this and feel they can't pipe up because "that's just VJ." It's discriminatory and it needs to stop.

I'm taking a stand and I don't care what any of you think. THE HATE NEEDS TO STOP.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

I'd gotten to the point of walking away from VJ due to one singular offender of this exact type of posting.

I tried reporting the offensive posts with mixed results.

I exchanged PMs with other members in our regional forum about the issue, we all agreed that it was amazing the Mods were allowing this to continue.

Some of us took the extra effort of writing long and detailed PMs to Ewok explaining how this one member was making several current active members reconsider our presence on VJ.

Guess what finally happened....

SILENCE! Not from Ewok but from the problem poster and a reply from the little furry one explaining that action had been taken.

You can't just be silent about these things. "All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing" (Leo Tolstoy, War and Peace)

If you find there are others commenting against the posts that offend you then by all means PM them and ask them to work with you agains the offensive posts. If enough users report the post and the replies denouncing the poster outnumber the pats on the back then the behavior can be reduced.

Just keep in mind that your replied to the offensive poster shouldn't cross the lines drawn by the TOS either. Maintain your composure and dignity while pointing out the pigheaded nature of the offensive posts.

How ridiculous.

You call that success? First you have to literally mount an electronic assault against a frequent offender, and the behavior gets "reduced".

The hate speech, the racist tones, the bullying and the plain old sheer rudeness should not be tolerated. From Point A.

Our journey together on this earth has come to an end.

I will see you one day again, my love.

Yes, I consider it a success.

In an ideal world the offender would have been stopped long ago but alas we live in the real world and internet forums are even worse than IRL.

The mere fact that troops were rallied for a common cause on an internet forum is a success for me.

I would hope that since the site owner had to get involved maybe there were some waves made behind the scenes so that next time it won' take so much effort.

I don't mind having to fight for something that I believe is right, especially when we win.

Since then I have noticed a drastic reduction in the number of similar posts/threads in our corner of VJ.

I thought this thread was about stinky fish.

Well it is in a way but we can't "Name Names" without violating the TOS...

Bob, thanks for your insight on what worked for you. Problem is, the issue at hand is not limited to one poster but endemic -- I'm seeing the behaviour I mentioned spreading further and further every day, and just today I saw it in Off Topic as well. Those of us who complain repeatedly DO have the ear of sympathetic mods, and I'm grateful (without being toadying) for what they have done in this area. (A particular tip of the hat to Kathryn and Krikit here, who have both answered my questions and complaints fairly and sensitively.)

I just don't know what to do at this point -- I'm now seeing VJers who have never seemed particularly prone to this sort of posting making cracks about how sub-par American women are. I am ALL for every one of us on here to love the people we have chosen to love, wherever they may come from, but I don't see the point in putting down people of other nationalities. As I've said about eleventy bajillion times, most of us would never dream of denigrating a certain nationality on here. It's insensitive on a board where we come from many nations, but beyond that it speaks of a distinct lack of class.

It's done in jest, and we are going to lay off. The so called thread you are speaking of in OT was nothing to post about. Everyone had a bit of fun, and it ended up on a good note. Your going over board with this. If I had a nickel for every time one of the VJ feminazi's trolled a thread and started unwarranted ####### my internet bill would be paid for this month.

Have a drink and get laid or something...but for crying out loud take a chill pill and relax. Again we are going to lay off with the "us vs them" from now on. Hopefully this puts an end to it and we all get along and live forever happy. :luv:

Let's let bygones be bygones. :)

Give with one hand take with the other, eh? Women complaining about misogyny and sexism on the boards aren't getting enough sex? Bravo for that one, chief

I don't think you could be anymore two-faced.

I suppose calling women who oppose this behavior "feminazis" is totally acceptable? And telling them to "get laid" is equally acceptable?
