I'm feeling really worried about the affidavit of support. My income is $2,400 below poverty level, so my mom is co-sponsoring for me, but her income barely meets the minimum requirement. I figured out that, including my fiance as a dependent, figuring in my four siblings and adding the required extra 25% of poverty threshold, her income of $33,000 is exactly on the minimum mark.

Is our visa in jeopardy of being rejected because of this? We have no extra assets, income is all we have.

Sarah,

The common solutions to your question are:

- Get a 2nd job. Lots of USCs take on an extra workload to meet the PG/Poverty Guideline requirements. You don't have to keep it forever.

-Get a better paying job than what you have.

-Make sure you are calculating everyone's household size correctly. Are there 4 kids living with Mom and/or is she still claiming 4 kids (or more) on her tax returns?

-Make sure you are looking at the correct PG figures; form I-864P.

-Remember that the PG figure is set in stone. If you meet it, you meet it. If you don't, you don't.

-London Consulate has been known to allow 'self-sponsoring' for K visa applications if your UKC has any cash or other assets. The figure is lower than you might imagine.

Despite all of the above, don't forget to consider what will you do with the tougher I-864 in just a few months. And, the age old question: how will you support yourselves? Bear in mind that the K-1 will likely not be working for the first 4-6 months in the US.
