I'm interested in opinions on getting a $2K built-in sound navigation system with voice recognition, 40GB HD, being 10GB to store music and 8-speaker Pioneer 250-watt surround sound system when buying a new car.

Do you do a lot of driving in places you've never been before?

No - cars are for driving. Most Many people have trouble concentrating on that fact. Your primary responsibility is to safely pilot the vehicle, not be jammin' to the tunes and distracting other driver's. I know - stick in the mud, but you asked for my opinion.

Calling an illegal alien an "undocumented immigrant" is like calling a drug dealer an "unlicensedregistered pharmacist". (because somebody gives a damn)

I find my GPS to be invaluable, not so much because I don't know my way around but because it does such a better job than I do of quickly calculating alternative routes when road conditions (congestion, flooding, etc.) are less than optimal. I'll look at the new route and think, "yes, of course!" and never look at it again for the rest of that ride.

Just bought a Nuvi 1300 yesterday w/lifetime maps and have Sirius Sat Radio. Everything I need to listen to my classic rock at a respectible 8 watts per channel x4.p.s. Oh yes... all in my fuel guzzling 98 Ford Ranger!

here's the comparison between the two

And here is a VJ thread describing the Obama administration's extreme displeasure with "technology-driven diversions" in the car.

I think you should pay the $2k, just to show him how not a socialist you are.

yes I go to Kansas City often and no way I could live without a GPS, every time I get lost I have to drive for like 40 minutes until I figure out where which one of the gazilions road i should be taking.. If you've driven in KC you'll know what I'm talking about. And once I took the wrong turn to go to work coming from KC, and I started to drive in this rural area with nothing but houses that looked the same, no signs that could give you an idea of where to turn in order to go back to our town, and the thought of being late to work, so yeah, GPS is a must have for me. I don't have a cell phone, btw.
