I see it happen almost every time I go to the grocery store here which happens to be managed by my brother. His employee's pack "Bush Orders" every day, and a lot of them are paid for with something called a "Quest Card" which is like food stamps. Those orders are mainly NY steaks, Australian Rock Lobster tails, etc...

Go to certain neighborhood stores in Anchorage and you will see people covered in gold jewlery driving Mercedes and BMW's buying the same thing with their "Quest Cards". Anyone who thinks this is an isolated incident must have just fallen off the last box car or lived in some dream world.

Damn that's living the high life. I must go to the ghetto to get my hookup then, with this 96-degree weather, I should be grilling instead of chillin.

New update says they busted the guy. Not for buying the food, but for selling it for 50 cents on the dollar.

Good as far as it goes. Do we assume the wealthy party that used the illegally purchased stamps will get off free?

A friend of mine owns a cafe in a strip mall locally... she was having a conversation with one of the workers at the pub in the same mall and it became obvious that 80+% of the employees and owners of stores in that strip mall were getting food stamps... she went on to ask me if I was getting them and I said NO... her response.. why not?

Years ago there was a stigma that went along with getting food stamps.. today there appears to a stigma that if you are not getting them there is something wrong since you obviously are not smart enough to outsmart the system...

Why not? Because I have pride in myself and my ability to contribute to society rather than leech off of it...

Yeah the good old days when policemen, insurance men and the bank owner all lived in the same neighborhood and you could feed a family of four on the $8 an hour you were getting working in a retail strip mall. Hmmm , now the bank owner lives in a gated community and has outsourced 90% of his teller work to India. .. hmmmm the good ole days

Barring idiots who abuse the system like the above example, although we don't know the circumstances, they could have been buying beans and rice for years and "splurged"for a special family occasion. But we shouldn't get upset if we give something away.. and people show up to take it.

As was said.. I dont like the idea that it is given so freely.

Florida is trying to implement a drug testing policy for those applying for or getting these types of handouts... ACLU says not so fast...

I would hope the Libertarians would say no too. Imposing drug testing and verification process after the fact is expensive. It's not that hard. Just make the amount disbursed a flat amount that does not go up or down with dependents or any other mitigating factor. Then, make the payments only last for 52 weeks, and make it so you can only collect one 52 week period every 10 years. Problem solved.

I like the max benefit for a 10 year period idea! add to that a max lifetime benefit of 104 weeks. all members of the family unit at the time of awarded benefit are noted as getting the benefit and not just an individual... that way we dont see mom collect for 10 years.. then dad for ten then mom and so on...
