See now Rob, if you read the link you would have a clue. Seeing how your from California it's understandable that all this is over your head...and then some. It's Alaska's oil, and we charge for said oil.

Alaska isn't California. We make due with what we have, and that's natural resources. We don't manufacture anything up here worth mentioning due to the fact the price of materials is sky high due to shipping cost. Where I live there are no roads in and no roads out. You get here by plane or in the summer months by plane or boat. Snow machines aka snow mobiles out number the cars in this town which has a population of 2,000 or some.

Here in Alaska we send our illegals to the joint as fast as we catch them. After that they get a free ticket back to wherever they came from. Unlike California which promotes illegals. Here we don't confuse our kids with "metro sexuality" in the schools. Here men are men, and chicks are chicks. We kill bears, caribou, moose, geese, ducks, etc... on a continuing basis. Iv'e whacked two brown bears myself right here in town (one at the public landfill).

We like our booze and guns, and we don't give a ratt's ####### about who cares. It's a Republican run state who came close to voting for independence on more than one occasion. Our state is filthy rich atm with money and we plan on spending it on our state...not give it away to the Feds.

You really should visit Alaska one time, there is no other place on earth like it. :)

You're right about the bolded section. The reason you don't have an illegal immigrant problem in Alaska should be obvious to you, but I guess you aren't a master of the obvious. Here's a hint, it's cold, and there is nothing in the state. If alaska is so filthy rich, why did they take TARP money? Why don't they take that money and help out the citizens, rather than suck up such a disproportionate amount of tax dollars?

LOL

Who said anything about seceding. But being eaten by the federal Governments mandates is another matter. Wish I could stay and play but back to work I go

Millions on welfare are counting on me ;-)

Check your post, you actually did say 'secede'

Nope, it's "profit sharing". Say you buy interest/stock in google and google turns a profit. So you in return receive a check. When google's profits drop, so does the amount of your profit sharing.

"The Alaska Permanent Fund" is a corporation. Again it's all on that wiki link I posted.

Yes, but I'd need to actually go and buy the stock. This is a government corporation. Per your link the legislature controls it.

It's semantics. They didn't do anything to earn or purchase shares in the stock. They get a stipend for having the misfortune of living in a poor state. Too bad the unemployed leeches up there can't be forced to face the same fate as the welfare leeches in the lower 48.

We take anything and everything we can get from the Feds for the fact they have screwed Alaska over seven ways to Sunday. Jimmy Carter took state land and turned it into Federal Parks/Preserves. Just like we are getting screwed on ANWR by a bunch of idiots who have never even been to Alaska yet seem to think they have the answers on how to run Alaska. And any Fed money this state gets does go to help it's citizens in one way or another.

Alaska gets a large proportion of Defense money due to the fact we are located next to Russia. We have a large border with Russia and we track any and every movement on the Russian side seeing how Russian fighters and bombers have crossed our air space here on a daily basis. We also track Russian shipping, subs, etc... from here. Atm there are at least three Russian nuclear subs that have sunk in Alaskan waters over the years and have polluted our waters with nuclear waste from said subs.

We have more coast line here in Alaska than the entire US put together. Our state equals one fifth the size of the entire lower 48. The pipe line here is another thing that has to be protected so we spend money on our National Guard up here like no other state. Alaska oil is vital to the entire US, so the better it's protected means better for the rest of the US.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

The few times I've gone into a Whole Foods in the yuppy sides of town I saw people (families) buying decent foods on food stamps. I guess its my nature not to start feeling enraged at that, as much as the ridiculous prices the supermarket charges. But I was in the area and hungry. Now people that have anger issues, well... that's something different.

It doesn't make me angry, it makes me disgusted.

And honestly, I'm not disgusted at the people doing it. I don't respect them, but I can't blame them for taking something that's offered to them for free. What disgusts me is the fact that we let it happen. Why are we so stupid?

The state legislature has a hand in it, but for the most part it's handled by a private contractors who specialize in investing. The legislature got greedy one time and tried to take all that money for schools, etc... and we the voters fixed that one real quick. We put a lid on the state politicians stealing that money and cleaned house all at the same time. The chances of those wannabee thieves ever getting voted back are zero to none.

You can extoll the virtues of Alaska all you want, but it won't change the fact that it has zero value outside of the natural resources it posses'.

Wrong again Freud. Location is a big thing along with our natural resources. Who else can control the Bering Sea which happens to be a major route to the Northwest Passage. Who else can track Russia's East Coast ? Alaska is so big we even have our own time zone named after this state.

Its stupid to think we can generalize an entire system based on single instances of abuse that obviously need to be weeded out by improving the way these programs are executed.

Yes we can generalize the system for the fact it's not just a few isolated instances and yes the system does need to be "fixed".

You'd need a better evaluation than just being angry or disgusted at the supermarket.

or is it stupid to think this is a single instance of abuse?

It would be indeed as well, as I am not chalking it up to any single instance. ;)

I see it happen almost every time I go to the grocery store here which happens to be managed by my brother. His employee's pack "Bush Orders" every day, and a lot of them are paid for with something called a "Quest Card" which is like food stamps. Those orders are mainly NY steaks, Australian Rock Lobster tails, etc...

Go to certain neighborhood stores in Anchorage and you will see people covered in gold jewlery driving Mercedes and BMW's buying the same thing with their "Quest Cards". Anyone who thinks this is an isolated incident must have just fallen off the last box car or lived in some dream world.
