Last year when I flew to Morocco to meet my love for the first time, it was Ramadan. I practiced it during my stay. No food, water, kissing, ect. ect. ect. The reason is simply because I love him and want to feel partnered in everything that we do. Ramadan is something he respects and loves to do, so I partnered him in this time.

If my darling husband is to arrive this year, during the time of Ramadan, it would be my pleasure to observe this again with him. And we've already discussed and agreed that Ramadan would be something we would do together every year for the rest of our lives.

I know that the time of Ramadan is a special time of year set aside for God. It's time to read God's word, do good works, to sacrafice and fast for HIM the most high. I can honestly say last year and this year I'm 80 percent doing Ramadan for my love. But I feel this idea of sacraficing for God is honorable, important, and expected by God, and with time I'm very sure my priorities will change.

I know we have quiet a few NON muslim SO's married to Muslim SO's and I was wondering if you do this as well?

We've had a few discussions about it.

I would be willing to do the fast (and no smoking) as well, but I am way too scared to give up water. It's hard to descibe but I get almost a claustrophobic/anxiety attack feeling just thinking about it. But Wadi says it's all or nothing, which I respect. I'm more of the mind, "Let's compromise", but I suppose that's kind of silly in this circumstance?

Of course I'll have to observe the kissing part whether I want to or not, that is unless I want to go kissing other people! :P

Kissing should be fine during Ramadan, as long as you can practice self control ;)

Abdullah Ibn `Amr Ibn al-`Aas said: "We were with the Prophet (S) when a youth came and said: 'May I kiss [my wife] while I am fasting?' He (the Prophet (S)) said: 'No'. Then an old man came and said: 'May I kiss [my wife] while I am fasting?' He said: 'Yes'. So we began looking at one another, so Allah's Messenger (S) said: 'The old man is able to control himself'. [Ahmad; Hasan]

We have a number of non muslim spouses attend the iftars (meal to break the fast) at the masjid, so it isn't unusual.

I am really wanting to - on many levels - and my plan is to try my best. I'm a little scared that I will have trouble with it. I, too, am used to having water all day and my work schedule can get pretty hectic. I am not the most pleasant person when I am hungry  but I do think it would do a world of good for me. The only real fasts I've done before have been eating only one fruit at the time of each meal. I know I can do that. We'll see.... I'd like to very much.

Boy... that was a ramble, eh? :D

I didn't practice Ramadan last year with my husband, then boyfriend. I wish I had. But I converted/reverted to Islam so I get to do it for sure this year! I am super excited! I think it will be hard to just stop my food intake and my kissing intake, but I think it will be well worth the outcome of growing closer to Allah! Good for you all doing Ramadan!

Bacon, egg and cheese without the bacon tastes pretty good. I'm partial to the folded (ie all scrambled) egg myself. I really should know better, having worked at McDonalds for ages.

last year, when my husband was just my boyfriend, i did ramadan with him, kind of as a "well if you're not eating, i guess i'm not eating" because at that time, he did basically all the cooking!! i was also really curious about Islam at the time (and still am), so it was also a way to learn about Islam for me. it was easier then because, at that time, i was on vacation and we would stay up really late (so he could eat before going to bed and feel less hungry during the day, usually 3 or 4 in the morning) and then i would sleep pretty late (12....1...130...) and ramadan was mostly during the month of october and sunset was sometime around 5:30 where we were in Paris. Soooooo i really didnt have that long to go, just about 4 or 5 hours of fasting!!! hahah.. but this year, even though my husband won't be with me for all of Ramadan (but hopefully part of it!!!!!!!), i'm going to do the whole month. or i'm going to try. to do as much as i can. for as long as i can. or on whatever days that i can. i'll be getting up earlier for classes three days of the week, so i'm sure it will be harder than last year!!!

one thing i am concerned about is that i do go to the gym usually 3 or 4 times a week.... not being able to drink water during/after is going to be a challenge!!!!! is it ok to wash your mouth out with water and spit it out?? i think i remember reading this someplace...

also, my husband and i kiss during Ramadan.... what i understand is that that is allowed as long as one can practice self control and it doesn't lead to other things.....:innocent:

I do exactly the same thing. Even before I was with Hicham romantically, that is when I was simply living with other Moroccans, I observed the fast out of solidarity and to share an experience with them. It was wonderful to partake in the break-fast food preparation, to feel he excitement of sundown and to of course eat the amazing foods. (It wasn't however, nice to gain weight, eat at 3:00 in the morning --which I still refuse to do, too unhealthy-- and see the hypocrites in the street who used to harrass me now treat me with respect --AHEM! But that is another story!)

My husband is coming during Ramadan (to the States) and even though I am pregnant I will experience the Fitur with him as best I can. I respect the religious reasons even if I have a more anthropological interpretation of it. ;)

Since Hicham "celebrates" Ramadan, I am going to give it a go with him. However if I need water or something to eat I will wait until he goes to work as not to eat or drink in front of him. I also have given up pork... not really intentionally but we eat together everyday so I never prepare it or buy it from the store. I have been working on some moroccan recipes for Ramadan so I'm getting excited about that!

I have a friend she is married to a muslim man from morroco.

ironicly she is also a minister. she refuse to practice anything pertaining to islam. They have since been married 5 years now. the religous wars continue. i see it more on his side. when ever she pray he has his habit of interroupting her like its not important. I have seen him do it more commonly when she blesses the food.

I think if your gonna practice ramadan fast its ok. if you dont belive in this then dont.

I am not Muslim however I am going to attempt Ramadan to help support my husband. I also see many other good things coming from the fasting than just the religious purpose, such as patience. I see nothing wrong with fasting even if I am not Muslim.
