do you have to have a job lined up or already secured to apply/get ir 1 visas for family members if you're a usc living abroad looking to return to US? or can you get the visas, move back and then line something up?

you will need proof of employment at 125% above 2011 poverty limits or a co-sponsor.Instructions are laid out in the affidavit of support form I864..good luck!

so technically you could apply/receive the visas before obtaining a job (always a tricky issue with timing of visa issuance and securing a job) if you had a willing co sponsor with sufficient salary?

Yes, I would suggest that you apply ASAP because the first stage of the process (I-130) will take on average 5-6 months anyway. In the meantime, you can be looking for work/places to live, etc., for establishing yourself back in the US....and soliciting a secure co-sponsor.

Canada is very bad with proof of domicile for the US citizen. If you are living in Canada you will want to go to the Canada section of VJ and read the pinned topic on domicile.

The main proof is having a job in the USA. Not a job offer but having the actual job.

Montreal is VERY strict and can hold your spouses visa for as long as they want until you move back to the USA and provide enough proof of domicile for them.
