Appearing today as a guest of the Clinton School of Public Service, the surprise 2008 GOP presidential contender said he did not entirely rule out running next year when he announced last month he had decided against throwing his hat into the ring. Running as a vice presidential candidate next year or for president in 2016 also are not out of the question, he said.

“Everything is still open. I haven’t closed doors, because I found long ago that that’s not a smart thing to do,” the Fox television talk show host and syndicated radio voice told reporters after a speech at the Clinton presidential library.

Mr. Trump, who said last month he would not enter the 2012 Republican presidential campaign, floated the possibility of entering the 2012 race as an independent candidate for president.

“Oh absolutely,” Mr. Trump said in response to whether he is considering entering the race. “I’d like to see what happens with the Republicans. If they get the right person. So far, I don’t see it.”

Mr. Trump, who met with former Alaska governor Sarah Palin Wednesday, said she is pressuring him to enter the race. “Sarah Palin wants me to run, a lot of people want me to run, and I actually think I’d be better off running perhaps as an independent,” Mr. Trump said.
