Co-sponsor needed?

I don't think anyone else on VJ has been through BF for a K1 visa, so I realize you can't say for sure, but looking for others' experiences, especially SS Africa, MENA, and LAC

I am finishing up my PhD, so for the last 4 years have made a student salary, ranging from ~23K to ~30K. Last year was 23K. My salary will go way up once I graduate, which should be around end 2011. I am expecting that my fiance will have his interview around October. My household will just be me and my fiance. Clearly I am above 125% of the poverty line, but I've heard that some consulates do not use that as a hard and fast rule - ie they might ask for a co-sponsor if you are above the line but your income is still fairly low. I also have approx 45K in student loans, not sure if that will be seen as bad.

My question is - do you think this is sufficient or should I ask my parents to co-sponsor? I do have some savings and investments (<10K) as well as my 401k from a previous job (whih I assume they won't take into account?). I am planning to attach a letter from my employer as well as tax transcripts - is this enough? Should I include brokerage statements, a letter from my bank?

Considering your income is above the poverty line (just), and you have some assets and good job prospects, I think you will be fine.

Why is it "just" above? With 23K that's over 4,000 over the 125%. My fiance's salary is only a 1,000 above and I thought as long as it's the 125% or over, it'll be fine...

Mine is about the same over the line but im including assets as well...a 401k worth over 100k...but ppl tell me we should be fine...i would include any assets you have as well since you are so close...that's why i included mine.

My fiance doesn't have any assets or deposit in his bank account except $500. I do have $10,000 but I am the beneficiary and transferring that money to my fiance's bank account we would lose money.

Anyone think this will be a problem if we only have the current income which is $1,000 above but no assets?

Maybe try the Europe reginal forum? Someone who's been through Germany might be able to help you. My impression from reading posts on VJ is that European consulates tend to be more forgiving than other regions, but I could be wrong.

Thanks for the reassurance everyone! So that's a no on the co-sponsor, but provide evidence of assets.
