Oh and at our last house we had both a US and Canadian flag flying! Since we've moved we haven't hung them back up yet, trying to find a good spot to put it. I'm glad my husband is okay with having it up.

I'll be moving to Annapolis in September!

I find that on my visits to Annapolis (haven't been since January, but still) to be quite welcoming. Perhaps it is a more welcoming area than DC. I have become acquaintances with the office ladies at my fiance's work and often join them for lunch when I am in town. Also one of his neighbours is very friendly with me and I have actually run into her at the grocery store a few times. It is kinda nice to bump into a familiar face! Maybe once I get there it may be a bit different.

I have talked to a few locals there, specifically those who see my getting in or out of my car at the mall/grocery store or wherever I may be. They see an Ontario license plate and I always get asked about it. This one guy who works at the Starbucks near my fiance's apartment remembers me. We were chatting one day while he made my drink and since then, he calls me Canada Girl. He always remembers me when I walk in, and that makes me feel welcome :)

That's really cool - getting to know folks before you arrive is really going to help.

when I met my husband he was living in Annapolis... I absolutely loved the area that he lived in but it was a tad too pricey. The people were very friendly around there. :)

Yes I bring a lot to the table for DC lol!! I just plopped down a lot of $$$$$ at Costco!! We get packed out for our move this monday!! They want 3 days to pack us out!! We only have a 2 bedroom condo!! But I guess what complicates things is lot of it gets stored here, some goes by land/sea and some goes by air! Then get the joys of painting out the condo!! We have renters moving in July 29th. Goin gto suck having no desktop computer, big TV for quite ahwile!! Hotel life for 2 weeks, joy joy!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Krikit - Hope everything works out for you! Take a deep breath (if that'll help...) :star:

Thanks, Moosker. Things are settling down and I will be there in a few days, so that will help to take the stress off.

We're still in Memphis at the moment. Apparently I missed a few spots with the sunscreen yesterday, so I'm staying out of the sun today. Got to find a card store, though, since it's my husband's birthday today and I forgot to pick one up. Whoops!

I have talked to a few locals there, specifically those who see my getting in or out of my car at the mall/grocery store or wherever I may be. They see an Ontario license plate and I always get asked about it.

I saw a car with Ontario plates as I was coming out of Borders the other day! I told my husband I was going to stand there until they came out because I might know them.

The relocation company we had told us 3 days, also. But they were done in two. They need to be closely watched, though, because they'll pack up your garbage and your dirty laundry and everything. I spent most of last year in a hotel. Totally sucked. So you'll be gone by the end of the month then. Hope you have a safe trip, Flames, and all the best for your new adventures.

3 of my wifes co-workers kept saying--CHECK UR GARBAGE BINS!!!!!! As like you said, they don't look and will just pack it. Rather not say which country, as its a small world, lol And I just keep things private online. Got me 5 huge packs of costco Toilet paper, lol Most of the stuff bought was just your normal household goods, nothing all that exciting. Did get me a new portable external hard drive for my laptop and Ooma--VOIP telephone. Hopefully it works out well. Hoping packing only takes 2 days! We are trying to be as organized as possible and have things sorted out, so easier for the packers. The biggest pain in the butt is that we may bot get our stuff for a few months!! So trying to mail the important stuff to ourselves. Good times!!

Moving to another country...hmmm, before getting married my Canadian wife lived with me in Arizona. Great weather and I introduced her to a lot of people and got her a part time job sort of (she didn't get paid, but had fun) at a scuba shop. We both scuba dive and travel to dive frequently - I am an instructor and she is working on her dive master certification. We have plans to move in 5 years or so to the Caribbean and work at a small dive shop and both be semi-retired. She is back in Canada now while we wait for the visa - she spent another winter there (since Feb) and has vowed never to go back to that.....we do have fun diving up at Tobermory (wrecks, you know), hitting the Timmy Hortons for coffee, or cruising Toronto, museums, etc. but restrict our travel to the nicer times when we have no snow and ice to contend with. It is also easier to get hockey tickets to a leafs or habs game here in Phoenix than in Canada :) Lucky we are both hockey fans too!! (I'm originally from Detroit)

We will never give up either of our homes - she will always be Canadian and we will always visit relatives both places - but we have a new and exciting life now, together, that is what we planned and wanted and we are happy with the arrangements. I remember as a younger person, it was so exciting to join the service and travel the world - it was great to get back home - and then the urge to be somewhere else would strike. I like to think I can appreciate where ever I am at, with the ones I love, and that the world is a really small place - I guess for me and my wife, the world is our home and we are fine as long as we are together - matters not where (Just so we don't have to shovel that snow :)

Sounds exciting! Safe travels and enjoy your new "location." :)

Sounds like my husband! He came down to the US in '92 and even after all that time if he sees anything or anyone wearing anything Canadian-related he'll stop and ask the person where they are from. When I used to come to visit him and we would go into NYC I would think he was nuts; he'd stop anyone on the street showing the Canadian flag or a Leafs shirt..whatever. But now I'm the same way. He was coaching at a soccer tournament last weekend and as we walked to the field I saw a group with a field chair that had a Canadian flag on it. Zoomed right in and asked them where they were from.laughing.gif They told us "Ottawa...the capital." We laughed and told them we were Canadian as well and we proceeded to talk about all of the places we knew in common. I was impressed they even knew where Welland was.

When I moved I bought plastic mattress covers for my box spring and the mattress. I placed them on the bed for the movers. They packed them and then wrapped my bed in their mattress covers and charged me for their mattress covers. Doh!

Sounds like a great adventure Flames! Can you still be a nurse where you're going?
