SSN "Valid for Work Only" from previous J1 Visa

We have a SSN that was issued on a J-1 visa 6 years ago. It looks just like any SS Card except it says:

"VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION"

just above the SSN.

Is this still a valid SSN? Should my fiancee use this number on all relevant forms for the K-1 visa?

Yes it is a valid SSN.

An SSN when issued is yours for life, they will not issue a new one so you should be using that SSN on forms or to add to bank accounts etc.

You just cant use it to work without DHS authorization.

Yes, it is still valid. When she enters on the K-1 she'll need her EAD card in order to work. Once the green card is issued she can go to the SSA and have the restriction lifted

Good luck

She can use the SSN and she does not have to change it when you get married. However, if she wants to change her name after marriage she'll either have to do that before I-94 expires, or when she gets the green card.

Good luck!

Just to add confusion to it all...

She had her name changed 1 month after getting the SSN. Therefore the name on the card does not match her name now. We are including documents to support the name change, but does this nullify the SSN?

SSN is number for your life, it does not change ever.

If you want to change the name on the card you will have to fill out the form and send the supporting document and hey will print another card with new name and same number and send it out.

If your card has “Valid for work only with authorization” and now you have GC or CR1 then both of them together work for your employer as your GC or CR1 shows you are eligible to be employed.

So does it mean that even after i get my GC i don´t need to go the office and remove the “Valid for work only with DHS authorization” condition from the card??
