Getting married at U.S. embassy?

I'm planning to go back to Ethiopia in August and i wanted to ask any of you out there, can we get married at the U.S. embassy while I'm there?

If we do get married there, are there like small courts taht we can go get married through the justice of the peace? without having a big wedding...thanks!! :yes:

I have read they do not do marriages at embassies but check on the embassy site

Ethiopia definitely has marriage courts (or registrars) for civil weddings.

The US embassy in Addis only can give you a letter from Consular officer issues a free to marry document for a U.S. Citizen or a legal permanent resident. Then the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs should authenticate the document so that the local municipality office accepts the free to marry document. call: 215-11-1562394 Application form for marriage certificate

You dont need to go to courts in Addis to get married. All you have to do go to the Municipality office (Kebele) whoever you are going to married live. Her / Him Kebele ID go to that Kebele office.

Monday- Thursday 8:30am- 12:30am

Eligible users

Inhabitants of the sub city with the age of 18 years and above

Customer requirements

Both applicants should bring documents from their respective Kebeles, and/or embassy which conforms that both are single. Such documents obtained 6 months before request to marriage certificate are not valid.

If one of the applicants has been married before, she/ he should have a document (divorce certificate) indicating that the applicant is legally divorced.

Whenever Ethiopians living outside the country want to acquire marriage certificate, they should bring a document from the Ethiopian Embassy where they reside, approved by ministry of foreign affairs , indicating that she/he is not married along with renewed passport

The bride and groom should bring a recently renewed resident ID cards (both the original and copy) or renewed Passport (original and copy)

The bride and groom should bring identical passport size photos (3 each)

Four Witnesses (2 each , both from bride’s and groom’s side) should be present at the ceremony with their ID cards (both original and copy)

A total amount of 50 birr to be paid

Service provision process and standards

If the above mentioned formalities and requirements are fulfilled, marriage certificate will be given to the bride and groom within 50 munities
