Really?

No don't carry it with you UNLESS traveling abroad. Remember NO ONE IS GOING TO ASK FOR YOU IMMIGRATION STATUS unless you traveling abroad and coming back to US.

I know it states in the welcome letter that you need to carry it with you. they say that so you'll lose it and apply for a replacement card and pay some 400 dollars fee.

I wish that was true. In my area, upstate New York near border, Immigration officers make regular stop checks on people driving through. I dont have a green card, but when i had my US Visa, and passport, they pulled me up, and wanted to see my documentation.

No one ever ask to see my green card. my green card sits in the drawer for 10 years. sometime people ask if I was a legal resident. that's it. no one ever ask me to produce the actual card. I just memorized the number, that's all I needed.

The chance to lose it is too high.

Nobody has ever asked me [unless it was a job interview, etc.].

My state ID was always proof enough.

But I think I'll get a photocopy. That's a great idea.

Yes, it's meant to be carried, as proof of your immigration status.

I never carried mine (far too valuable to loose and a PITA to replace). Now it's not a problem because I don't need it anymore

I'd definitely carry it if you're anything other than caucasian and live in some state like AZ.

Had you ever stop to look at all the non-Caucasian illegal's that live, work and walk the streets in Arizona, with out apprehension or harassment from the law on a daily bases. It staggering.

I keep my card in a fire safe at home and only carry it if I am travelling out of the country. I keep a good quality colour photocopy in my wallet when I am out and about at home.

Well, Lizzy,

if you live close to the Mexican border, have to pass an immigration checkpoint frequently, or look like someone who just swam through the Rio Grande -- fully dressed -- it makes perfect sense to carry the card when leaving the house. But for 99% of us furinners, that luckily doesn't apply.

:P

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

Everybody here is saying how they worry that they might lose their GC if they carry it with them This is the part I don't understand. It's the same size as your Driver License. How many of you ever lost your DL? I never did. It's just sitting in your wallet, how can you lose it? Just put your GC behind a DL and you are done worrying about loosing it.

I would venture to say a lot of people, states have driver services facility for 'duplicate license' just for that very reason.!

Well, I lost my whole wallet once, at a restaurant in Vegas. (I found it again a couple of hours later, amazingly, by retracing my steps.) People lose their wallets all the time, either accidentally or through theft. I could replace everything in my wallet, including my driver license and cash, plus the wallet itself, for far less than it costs to replace a green card.

I've had my wallet stolen once (I blame my sister for this as she was sitting next to it and was supposed to be watching it), and my phone stolen once (from my pocket on a tram... they hit me in the head with an umbrella to distract me). Replacing my phone was relatively easy but I was out the price of a new phone and still had to pay on the contract of the old one and it was only new. Made me feel better to know I had EVERY lock possible on that phone as a test. Messages, photos, accessing the phone and everything had separate locks so good luck to them! Replacing my wallet was a little upsetting. I lost the library card I'd had since a child that was no longer made. Small thing but I wished I didn't have it in my wallet. I didn't lose my drivers licence though because I had it on me while paying for our food.

There are some vile people on this earth willing to rob you blind if only given the chance and while it is possible to replace the greencard... it's not cheap so why risk it?
