Immigrants from Europe

I read posts from Immigrants from Europe to the USA and some are loving it in the USA and some dislike it and some are 'doing ok for now' and say on the whole, they want to stay

Some feel homesickness at some stage or feel like strangers. Some are repulsed by some aspects of US society and some never have a single negative feeling and it's a dream come true

What I am interested in, is how immigrants from Europe see the DIRECTION of the USA

I suppose one should define that as economic or social as the two do not always march hand in hand

Individuals might be doing well economically while the country goes the other way - and vice versa - but looking beyond our own circumstances, how do we see things moving in the future ?

Will it make us feel more at ease or more alien

For my part I am economically better off here and that continues so long as my wife works and provides me with health insurance

As far as American society is concerned I think it will get better and better

I say that because it has been the direction of the country since the civil war at least.

Votes for women

An end to slavery

Discrimination laws and the de-segregation of the army

Social Security

Medicare

etc etc

Look how far the country has come and how it has developed and changed

It has continued for 150 years in the same direction and without abatement despite Rand Paul wanting to restore restaurant owners the right to bar blacks.

It is all in one direction and that is the direction of social liberals

And the big changes occur during times of political polarization - The civil war/Vietnam/Civil rights etc etc - the country torn by dissension and then a better future emerges.

I think this is one if those times and I am most optimistic that the tea party and it's grisly longing for the unjust past will be trampled into obscurity and the unstoppable trend of social liberalism will restart

I don't refer to economics as I am secure on that front and have no entitlements here - so it isn't a concern for me as I don't have anything to lose in that debate

How do you see the USA developing ?

Opinions of immigrants is what I am really after and the nativists and tea party brigade should stay at the window sill and continue to pull the wings off flies or whatever they do to try and feel as though they are still in charge

yes - so long as they get refused treatment coz they lost their job at 9am today !

Of course there is always COBRA for them - $15kpa each should do it while they seek out an employer who wants a 50 year old with gun handling skills and a big belt buckle

If they don't like the direction of the USA, they could always divorce their spouse, marry a person from Darwen Lancashire and move there. Obviously that wouldnt work, so I am afraid the RW nasty party must live out their years here - watching their political clout sliding at the same rate as their health and employability

Dear Mr Backstroke - the only time you are in, and required to stay in, a polite society (for certain), is when you are on a thread I have started

I tolerate no swearing/obscenities or name calling

Apart from that, pointed and harshly targeted discussion is very likely and any time you log on to the politics and religion thread, you should be prepared for that

Every time you talk about TOS, a greenhouse and a rock thrower spring to mind

You occasionally bring some color to the debate so please don't be put off

Remember that you can't make a pearl without some sand in the oyster

Being nasty to some entity outside of VJ is not a TOS thing

TOS refers to individuals and members of VJ

You really do need some training on these distinctions which are not that hard

If I say elephants stink, it isn't a TOS offense because elephants are not members of VJ and don't participate in debates

If we all had web cams lit up, I might have to revise that

The Land of the Brave and Free is a fantastic country per se, with the two disadvantages:

- that it is ruled by corporations via campaign funding of bought politicians, and

- that it is occupied by many drones, people who wouldn't find Afghanistan on a map if you put their nose above it.

The dummification and deliberately restricted access to quality education is all part of the plan, to keep the dumbed down in the gutter, yet treat them to little treats such as gay marriage, socialized medicine, gun "rights" issues . . . all stuff that distracts them from the real issues so that they won't realize that they get shafted, big time. Lubrication dampens the sensation, but not the outcome itself.

Yet even those who are blind as a bat can be pushed over the cliff; tell them to take away the one and only thing they can hope for at old age, even if they have nothing, Medicare, and they will respond, as they have just past week by voting Democrat in an area that has been a Reptilitan stronghold for decades.

The corporate lobby is a powerful one, yet it is inevitable that eventually We The People will win. It may be a slow recovery to restoring social health, or it may be some sort of a revolution, USSR, Yugoslavia, Middle-East like, but it will happen, no doubt about it.

But that is outside of them - they can repent and reform and become Left Wing Nut Jobs in an instant and it is their party and their philosophy I am deriding and not them as an individual

It's not ok to have a go at someone because of something they can't change - such as color or ethnicity - but it is ok to say they are being selfish when they join a selfish political party

Because of 12 years intense training in law, I sometimes forget that most people struggle with making these distinctions. I will try and be patient until everyone is onboard and realises that it is the sin and not the sinner that I am targetting
