Hi can someone tell me exactly how a student visa works and how long it takes? Is it available to everybody? Does it work in any college like a community college? I am a US citizen and my brother lives in Mexico and I would like him to study over here but I am not sure if I can file a petition for him and if I can it probably takes a long time. So the only option is a student visa but I don't know how it works. Thanks in advance. Oh he is 21 years old.

He has to apply to a school and be accepted first. Then he has to show sufficient funds to pay for his studies and other expenses while studying in the US. Also keep in mind that a student visa is a non-immigrant visa, so if his ultimate intent is to immigrate to the US permanently, a student visa will not allow him to do that.

First thing to do is research schools and programs and find programs he is interested in and qualified to apply for. Before you even get to the visa process, you have to first go through the application process for the school.

05/12/2011 - Day 70 - EAD Arrived, issued on 05/02

06/14/2011 - Day 103 - E-mail notice: Interview letter mailed, interview scheduled for July 20th

07/20/2011 - Day 139 - Interview at Federal Plaza USCIS location

07/22/2011 - Day 141 - E-mail approval notice received (Card production)

07/27/2011 - Day 146 - 2nd Card Production Email received

07/28/2011 - Day 147 - Post-Decision Activity Email from USCIS

08/04/2011 - Day 154 - Husband returns home from abroad; Welcome Letter and GC have arrived in the mail

("Resident since" date on the GC is 07/20/2011
