hi! i have been in the US for two months now under the K1 visa. my fiancee and I will get married this 10th of june and currently getting my AOS application ready. i have read the guides and some discussions on the forums site. we previously had a lawyer firm to assist and prepare the forms for us. But now we decided to do it ourselves. i am just glad to see that there are so many available tips here about going through the process.

I already have my SS card. do i have to have my SS card name changed first after the wedding before applying for the AOS (it is in my maiden name)?

Yes, have your name changed on your SS after marriage and before filing your AOS as you will be filing the AOS using your married name.

SLFDK, thanks! how long does it take to change name on the SS?

Once you get your name changed, they will give you a letter confirming the name change. The letter says it takes about 2 weeks to get your new SS card. I received mine in about a week.

You can change it but it is not necessary because SSN is not required for AOS.

My Immigration Journey:

K1: June 2010 - December 2010

AOS: April 2011 - June 2011

ROC: April 2013 - August 2013

Naturalization: March 2014 - August 2014

Also, you can change it but if you are past the 75th Day after your POE, the SSA will not issue a new card in the new name until you have filed for AOS/EAD and received either your EAD or your GC. They can't issue new cards to anyone with less than 15 days remaining on the I-94 (75 days in the case of the K-1.)

Since you don't need it for AOS, the choice is completely up to you whether you change it before or after filing AOS.

Feb. 19, 2016 - NOA1

Yes, have your name changed on your SS after marriage and before filing your AOS as you will be filing the AOS using your married name.

There is NO requirement for this. I filed AOS with a SSN listed and it was in my maiden name (forms in mmarried). I had my greencard approved and it took me almost 6 months to bother changing the SSN.

there's a section on the form which says: SSN if any. i am unsure if i should just leave it blank or just fill it with my SSN though it is still under my maiden name. or, if i just change the name first before filing.

Fill in your SSN if you have it. Doesn't need to be in your married name to file AOS. The only thing is when and if you get a job you WILL need to change it. For AOS purposes there's no need.
