Can my husband activate his Visa at the POE, stay a few days, then return to Canada and continue workng while waiting to be mailed his social security number. I know with the CR-1, that the stamp at POE is proof to work, but being a USC I know employers want your SSN. Thank you all for your help.

Just be prepared for the SSN NOT to arrive--even though u checked off the box on the DC230 form!! For many, they have to goto the local SSN office and re-apply and then a week later it should arrive.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Thank you for the response. I will have him come back down a week after his POE and go in and apply in person. We are only about 10 minutes from the Social Security office. We are going through this process faster than predicted (NOA2 in 90 days) so he needs to continue to work up in Canada for a few months to add to our savings before he actually moves here. However, with the POE completed he can go back and forth on the weekends (only 4 1/2 hour drive). Can not wait for him to be here but we are being realistic and the $5k we can save in those few months will be a huge bonus in savings should it take longer than expected for him to get a job.

one can always go earlier--but they recommend one goes to the SSN office 10-14 BUSINESS days after POE. Takes awhile to get everything in the system. Once u goto the office, they can tell you yes, thier is a # or not--in that case u reapply--download the form and fill it out

http://ssa.gov/online/ss-5.html and have ID with u, birth certificate, birth certificate. They wont give u the # over the phone, but I do believe one can go back to the office the next day after applying and they can tell you the #, but not sure on that.
