This is not a helpful answer because Ciudad Juarez is only one place in a very large country, just because she is from Mexico does not mean she "knows the ropes" in that city... I know that my fiance and I are very worried to go there, he is from Mexico, his whole family is from Mexico, his friends are from Mexico and NONE of them would ever feel safe going there considering the problems it's facing with the drug war.. Just because they are from Mexico doesn't mean they know the ropes..

Anyway to answer the OP's question, she'll probably be fine. I've been reading a lot of reviews from people who have gone and it seems like the area around the consulate is relatively safe. She should take precautions, only go out during day light, stay in the consulate area, don't go wondering around the city.. that type of thing and she should be fine. She only has to be there for a couple of days.

Others have done it and been okay. Like nikolacolada said, just have her stay in one of the hotels near the consulate/medical clinic area. Most of the hotels have shuttles that will take her to and from all her appointments, and even to DHL and the airport.

She is still living in Mexico ... she's not dead.. so going somewhere she should be familiar with their way of life .. it's mexico .. all the same. have some street smarts i'm sure she'd be find.. i many others have done it.. so that alone says a lot... and the office seemed to be in the same pace so this is not a different case.. nothing to even talk about.

i wouldn't worry too much about being in cdj as long as she stays within the consulate tourist area and, of course, doesn't go out after dark. i would however be very wary about the trip there if it involves driving or taking a greyhound-type bus because the highways all over mexico are unsafe for the most part. some of them are old, and narrow, and just dangerous because of their layout. others are dangerous because there's people waiting for any vehicle to stop to harm them, and that includes those big buses. i've also heard stories where they take big objects like the trunk of a tree or another car and block the highway and once you're forced to stop they steal everything you've got if not worse. i think that doesn't happen so often in the south of mexico which is the more peaceful part, but going to cdj i wouldn't risk it. i recommend flying unless she's close enough to where the trip would be very brief.

If it makes you feel any better they said on the news (Mexican news) that violence has gone down 60% in Juarez which is quite a bit. I haven't heard any bad stories about girls going. Just have her stay in a hotel across the street and just go to and from the Hotel. I was nervous about my fiance going but as long as he is smart I know he will be fine.

I have not gone yet and I probably would not if I did not have to... but I have read that is safe..ish around the consulate and medical area.... as long as she/he stays around there it will be fine. Like some other people said, try not to go out at night and I would fly instead of driving there.Thats my plan actually, I am flying Monterrey - Juarez and I am considering going all by myself too. If she/he does fly, make sure you get a secure taxi, u might have to ask someone in the aiport to help u get one. I recommend you read the reviews about the Consulate in Juarez, they are a lot of help!
