If health care was nationalized, or single payer, would the voucher system work to provide seniors with Medicare? Another naive question- would the voucher system help anyone? Would anyone be able to get this insurance or would everyone not be able to afford it?

Sorry but I don't have much experience with Medicare and I am gathering information to establish an honest fact based opinion.

It's a way to move risk from the taxpayer to YOU. Yes YOU !

You get a voucher for say $9k pa but I bet it doesn't increase much - so after 5 years the voucher might be $10k but the insurance company premium (if they accept you) might have gone from $9k to $18k

At that time the repubs shake their heads and say 'Its the market - hard luck - don't complain - it's un-American'

Compare that to Medicare as it is now

The repubs spend half their time saying the US is the mightiest and most powerful and richest country the world has ever known - and the other half of the time saying they cant afford to look after granny

Doesn't add up does it. Meanwhile the rich get richer and the poor get poorer and both keep voting repub.

Speaking of "rich", you do realize seniors are the wealthiest age demographic we have.

Why are you taking the food out of the mouths of young families to provide viagra to Warren Buffett?

It's a mystery

I can go back to at any time too, but what fuels our desire to be in the USA is pure opportunity. I could never break through the German "hidden" caste system no matter how long I was there or how good my German became.

In the USA you are not held back by who your parents were(are) or what they did. You are not held back because you don't have a certain diploma (German Version of a degree) with references from a certain number of highly placed people. In the USA you are judged by what you know, how you use it and what value you can bring to a company or what skills you can sell in an open market. Sure the system is not perfect, but at least in the US I hava a chance to get in to the game and make it or break it on my own.

but anyway, back to the topic..

I hope Medicare is a means tested program and that Warren Buffett is not receiving Medicare.

Liberals fear that turning Medicare into a means tested program will subject it to the same kind of attacks welfare programs have historically been subject to.

Medicare should be a 'voting record' tested program

All rightos who are at death's door sick, should be told to go and forge a bright new future using ingenuity, entrepreneurial skills and American exceptionalism

Only non-rightos with a clean voting record should get medicare

If health care were single payer, that would essentially be Medicare for all. Why would you need vouchers in a single payer scheme? I don't understand that question.

Health care can be provide for between 35 and 50 % of present US health care costs (17% of US GDP)

Everyone pays now with lower salaries - but much of the services provided consist of PROFIT and Administration and unnecessary procedures

Strip all that out and health care costs would be halved overnight

Now lets see - which political party's backers would fight against such a beneficial change and why ?

Health care in the US is a predatory racket

Partly because the Gov't is so deeply involved.

THere is a reason I can get a cavity filled for $75. out the door.....(actually less than that)

It's not because the government runs it trust me.

I had a tiny blob on my ear that was removed two years ago. Last year they asked me to come in and they looked at my ear and said fine. I got a bill for $175 and I was in there less than 30 seconds. I got a letter today and they want to do it again. I bet they do.

Once they get a chance they will milk you to the max. I spent $2k on dentists in the last month and it was elective and they conned me into it. He wants to replace my crowns at $1200 a go as they have 'been there a while'

I have refused to do more as the crowns are fine. The dentists especially are simply predatory.

I suspect that much of Medicare is unnecessary stuff that the hospitals are conning people into in order to run up scandalous bills. Then add fraud and voilà - the most expensive system in the world that does not give the best results.

The US has gotten itself into a mess by not curbing all the legal and illegal abuse of the medical system
