Criminal Charges for Stolen Greencards

So, apparently my new husband being in the hospital is not enough...someone felt the need to come into his room and steal a variety of items including....you guessed it...his green card. I am curious as to if anyone knows the penalty for that crime should the moronic thief who we have about 10 photos of from video be caught? He committed a felony and then some worth of theft.

I'd be more worried about identity theft. I second Ontarkie's sentiments about your husband's illness. Hope he gets well soon! rose.gifrose.gifrose.gif

be sure to report the theft, but the card will be sold on the street for some cash to another criminal for sure.

I don't know about your hospital, but every hospital we've been to they tell patients not to bring valuables to the hospital or to surgery. Maybe itz just me, but that GC is VERY valuable, and is to be guarded in a safe place. May the crook that took it be hung from the rafters!

Best wishes to your hubby's recovery.

I think that in this situation the bigger concern is the use of the personal information for identity theft. I wish it was a simple perp but it rarely is. That green card may not be of much use but the other documents such as SSN, DL, etc. will certainly be quite useful for scumbags foreign and domestic (the I don't want to pay my alimony, I don't want to pay my child support so I'll just scam someone else's ID). I know some employers won't examine a GC too closely or at all. Terrible thing to happen to a fellow when he's in the hospital.

This incident brings to mind what happened a few weeks back.

I was getting together a group of friends at lunchtime who would have to go through a

security check so I could give them a private tour (of what I can't say at this time).

They were entering a famous building so naturally there is a security check.

One of them is a friend of my Italian friend, a Japanese woman.

When it came time to present a picture ID to security, she didn't have one

because she always leaves her passport at home apparently because she

is afraid that it may be stolen if she carries it everywhere.

I gave them my ID as security to allow her to enter with the group, so she

didn't have to go home to fetch her passport. The ID is kept and then

returned to the visitor (or me in this case) upon exit.

A hospital is the last place you would want to bring anything of value

because security is often lax. That does NOT excuse what happened.

Hopefully, the idiot caught on video may have had to sign in or identify

himself in some way to security. If not, he may only be caught if he was

a frequent visitor (which is likely).

Best wishes for a swift recovery rose.gifrose.gifrose.gif

Replacing the Green Card will cost you 450 of your hard-earned dollars. The way I understand your personal situation you two have been through a lot already. I can't grasp why you would bing a Green Card, a gold-crusted Rolex, or a stack of $100 bills to the hospital. The Green Card belongs to the safest place you have access too, preferably in a firesafe somewhere in your house. I feel very sorry for what happened to you, but at the same time I don't get why you allowed it to happen.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.
