When You Eat Your Smarties

I lived near Dare Cookies in Kitchener, and I tell you, it smelled wonderful! French Cremes I found hard to find even in town there! Though my favourite cookie also had to be PC Decadent chocolate chip. I do miss PC brand, their sweet with heat mustard, and their BBQ sauce. Heck, even the Insider's report was fun to read!

One thing I am very surprised about is the peanut butter here. I always bought the PC organic, or just peanuts. (I don't like margarine or sugar in my peanut butter) I knew I wouldn't find anything remotely close, even the Skippy Natural has additives in it, so I was looking for a health food store. I purchased the Smuckers brand peanut butter, it's just roasted peanuts, and I tell you, I love the stuff a thousand times better than the PC brand! Yes, it has more of a roasted flavour, but yum!

If you don't find wine gums but do find sports mixtures (Basset's) then get them, they're harder than wine gums, and I don't know if they have any wine in them, but they're pretty good. I've got my eyes out for either...

I went to the store today with honey and he bought yet another pack of gummy bears,

I spent a bit of time wondering why you were taking honey to the store.

Arrowroot cookies for my LO when they were here recently!

I love Arrowroots and bring them back too. lol

The Campbells tomato soups here are way too sweet. Same with the tomato juice. I haven't brought any soup back with me because I mostly make my own, but I do bring back the juice. Even my husband likes it better than what you can get here. This trip I brought back:

- Rye Bread

- Shreddies

- Vachon Au Caramel

- Liquid Bovril

- Turkey Bites Pepperettes (hubby says "I'm not sharing no Turkey Bites with no Canadians out there" as he sees I am writing this on VJ. )

- Dark Chocolate Digestives

I couldn't find Malt Bread anywhere so I didn't bring those. I'm sure there are other things I brought but I can't recall what they are at the moment. I did take care of my buttertart craving while I was there so I didn't bring those with me this time. I meant to pick up some date squares but forgot. :(

Oh wait! I just remembered I also brought back both regular and mint Aeros, as well as Smarties. I did not eat the red ones last.

:hehe:

Some of our local Kroger grocery stores have a small British section and they usually have Maynards wine gums in there. I have seen them at World Market before as well. Not sure if you have either of those near you.

Yes if you can't find British candies such as Smarties or Aero or winegums in the British sections of grocery stores (which I have yet to see any British sections in grocery stores) or in actual British Import stores, World Market does carry Wine Gums and Aero chocolate bars at least. Not sure if I've seen Smarties there yet, but I think they may be in there too in their European section along with a lot of other British candies that people are used to in Canada...

A good alternative to Shreddies is Wheat Chex (or maybe it's whole wheat chex... something like that). It's very very similar in texture!

I will definitely try them... I know that regular Chex has sugar in it, so it's out, but if the wheat is just wheat, then I'm in!

Recently, my first small box of smarties had no green ones. What a jip.

Surely the green ones hold the same magical powers as those OTHER green kind I won't mention?

Yes most larger cities should have at least one or more British Import stores that stock all the popular British foods/candies/items etc. I know we have a few around here, but I have only gone once years ago. It had Aero and Winegums and Smarties etc there I recall...

- Dark Chocolate Digestives

I couldn't find Malt Bread anywhere so I didn't bring those.

They make dark chocolate digestives? Mmmmm. I'll have to look for those. Also love malt bread. The Wegmans near me has an international section of food where they have a British section, an Irish section, and Indian section .... etc. It's pretty good. No Canadian section though. :(

It actually is pretty good. I was kind of leary of it because I like to put HP on my bacon butties. I think it tasted a bit sweeter but definitely smoother. She's coming back in May if you'd like me to put in an order for you. lol

Yes they do! They have them at the World Market in the US and you can get the President's Choice ones in Canada. :) Malt bread is really hard to find. Even though Fortino's carry it, it'####### and miss as to whether you're there on the day they've got it. It's a mystery to me why they don't just order more. The grocery guy I spoke with said they sell out of it all the time. Well, hello.

I've never heard of Malt bread...

I had to go to a Mennonite store to purchase yellow split peas... I love to make split pea soup, and couldn't find them anywhere here! I will say that next time my parents come to visit me, a can or two of Habitant soup will be coming with them...
