Everything is getting so stressful. Now after suffering for finding a co-sponsor i was thinking about my name change, because on my birth certificate it says father's last name, but my mom and him never got married, so she used her last name on my everything, basically. From SSN to School to State Id to passport. Now since my mom never changed my name legally i was wondering if there will be a problem with this?

I take a rr check from my father's benefits after death, but it's issued under his last name on this check. And i was thinking to change my last name legally so i can change it to my mother's last name, will there be a problem, if they do a background check and see i am changing my last name...

i know they ask on the form, to state all names, and to submit the documents stating the name change, if there is one... but i haven't gotten it legally changed yet, but like i said all my documents beside the check and my birth certificate are under my mother's last name.

It's a mess, And i need some advice on this

Your legal name is the name on your birth certificate. I don't know about the state where you were born, but in California a child can be given the father's last name at birth even if the parents weren't married.

How did you manage to get an SSN and passport with a birth certificate in a different name, and without providing proof that you changed your name?
