In Third World countries, wealth concentrates at the top. That's what they want. Not that we're not already like that but they won't rest until the suburbs are strewn with tenements and the guys at the top have even more and can do even more. See the recent moves by the GOP in Maine to legalize child labor. That's a preview of attractions to come.

b. I agree with the motives you ascribe to the wealthy here, but I'm somewhat less pessimistic than you about their ability to achieve their aims. This country has had robber barons before, and has always had bought-off politicians and judges from Tammany Hall to Cook County IL to the US Capitol. Every so often, when it gets intolerable enough, we purge house and get a guy like Teddy Roosevelt to shake some big sticks at them. We don't entirely get rid of them, but we beat them back enough to let that incredible engine of American innovation and openness take hold for the little guy. Yeah, I still believe in the Dream.
