First of all, let me tell you how the confusion started...

We came from Thailand to San Francisco (PoE), she handed the "brown envelope" to the immigration officer and got nothing back from him. Anyhow, that was on July 6th and we just recently got legally married here on September 5th. So here are my questions:

1.) Was he supposed to give her something back?

2.) If he was what are we supposed to do now?

3.) What is a I-94?

4.) Now that we are legally married she is here to stay right? I mean, how long can she stay legally without sending in the AoS paperwork?

5.) Lastly, can we go and get her a SSN now? And after she gets the SSN can she get a state ID?

I tried to do a search for most of this and it brought up nothing (I suck at computers and computer related things!). Any answers anybody can give me is GREATLY appreciated!

Thanks again!

1. No

2. Nothing.

3. It is stapled inside her passport across the page from her visa, at least my husband's is.

4. You can't NOT send in AOS paperwork. You have time to do that though...we waited a couple weeks after we were married to do that.

5. Some recommend waiting a couple weeks before doing that, to make sure she's in the SAVE system. As for the State ID, I think it depends on the state you live in. The State ID is for identification purposes...she can't drive or work on it. That's why most people file for an EAD along with their AOS.

Best wishes!

Just the I-94. It should have been stapled into her passport. The brown envelope he would have forwarded on to the district office.

2.) If he was what are we supposed to do now?

3.) What is a I-94?

The I-94 is your record of entry, with a expiration date on it. If you're a visitor, you're supposed to leave by that date. If you're applying for AOS, you should do it as soon as possible.

4.) Now that we are legally married she is here to stay right? I mean, how long can she stay legally without sending in the AoS paperwork?

There is no specified date for a K1 to apply for AOS, but it should be done ASAP. She cannot work until she gets EAD, and she cannot get EAD until she's applied for AOS.

5.) Lastly, can we go and get her a SSN now? And after she gets the SSN can she get a state ID?

I think once her I-94 is expired, she's not eligible for a SSN. If she has no SSN, its difficult to do much of anything.

Just read the AOS guides above. Tons of info there.

Thanks again!

1. No they keep the contents of the envelope...

2. nothing to do.

3. I-94 is the Arrival/departure card that was stapled into her passport when she went through POE.

4. Yes she can stay and you should file for AOS as soon as you can, there is no set time limit.

5. She should have got SSN before she got married... you can try to get one now but they will only issue it in her maiden name... or you can wait for her EAD and then go get her a SSN in her married name... Dont know about your State ID but here in MA they wont issue one without a SSN and a EAD or Greencard...

Hope this helps

Thanks everyone! I totally understand now. The reason I thought we were supposed to get "something" back was because now we have no proof that she got all of her shots in Thailand, but no big loss I guess.

You guys are great! :D

She should have got a copy of her vaccination record from the doc that did her medical in her home country....

She will need this information to get the I-693a (vaccination Supliment) from a civil surgeon here in the states....

You will need to try and get a copy of her vaccination record...

Great...how do I go about doing that?

Can we just have them redone here if we can't get her records?

Can she contact her doctor in her home country? Joel didn't have his either when he came home, so we called his doctor and they allowed his mom to pick up a copy of his vaccination record. She mailed it to us and then we were able to get the I-693a filled out with no problems. :)

I'm not sure, we were at some little hospital in Chiang Mai Thailand. Her family lives in an Akha village in the jungle at the VERY north of Thailand. We will try to get them I suppose but if we can't we can have them redone here right?

Can you contact the doctor yourself... they may be able to send you a copy... if not then she can have blood tests done to see what vaccines she has had...

Kezzie

Yes.... David did not have any record of his childhood vaccinations, so the dr drew blood and tested his titres. They could see what he need to have done and created a new record for him. I wouldn't blindly re-vaccinate...

8-30-05 Met David at a restaurant in Germany

3-28-06 David 'officially' proposed

4-26-06 I-129F mailed

9-25-06 Interview: APPROVED!

10-16-06 Flt to US, POE Detroit

11-5-06 Married

7-2-07 Green card received

9-12-08 Filed for divorce

12-5-08 Court hearing - divorce final

A great marriage is not when the "perfect couple" comes together.

It is when an imperfect couple learns to enjoy their differences.
