Hey all,

I arrived in USA in February on a K1 visa.

Since then have got married and filed for AOS. My Bio appt is in June.

A few days ago i recieved a firm job offer...great i know! BUT i currently have no green card/social security number.

I dont want to lose this job opportunity. Is there anything at all that i or my hopefully future employer can do to sort this out?

You have is to wait until you have (at minimum) your EAD. .

The only thing you can do is get them to delay your start date until you have that in hand which, if your bio appt. is in June, should be within a couple weeks after that date. You didn't mention it, but I am assuming you filed for the EAD along with the AOS. If you didn't, there's really no guessing when the GC will be approved.

All you can do is ask for an expedite on the EAD and show as your firm job offer in hand. Some people have been successful with expedite if they have a firm job offer. Good luck.

What do you mean you're "still waiting"? Did you actually go and apply for one at the social security office?

Nope, we read on this site that we couldnt go to an office for a social secuirty number, if my 90 days from arrival was about to expire. At the time we read that...it was about to expire.

Not long after that we placed 3 applications into the mail. Work authorisation, travel authorisation and adjustment of status application.

I then made this thread and as you can see, i was told "Only option is if your employer is willing to wait couple months until you get the GC,

lot of them would be ok if you have GC coz HR knows you will get your SSN in couple weeks."

So my understanding was that my work authorisation would arrive, then shortly after, couple weeks? my social security number would be delivered.

So i begin waiting....

Start of June, I was invited to attend a bio appt. Roger that! i went, did everything they asked me to do.

Roll on a few weeks...i got combo card delivered.

Its now quite approx 5 weeks later, which where i come from is more than a couple of weeks and no *number* has arrived.

So im sitting here twiddling my thumbs thinking surely there is something pro active i can do?

hence why im here today, to ask, how do i get myself fully authorised to work. Am i good to go now? or do i need a social security number?

If i do need a number and it was supposed to arrive, well it has not...so what now?

Cheers

You need to go to the SS Office and APPLY for your SSN. It does not come automatically. You cannot work until you get the number. Good luck.

You're able to work with an EAD and SSN. When you get your EAD (which you have) you go to the SSA and apply for your SSN. About 2 weeks later (usually less) the card arrives in the mail and yuo're able to work. OR you can go in about a week after applying (again sometimes earlier) and they will give you the number. You don't need to wait for the physical card to start working.

Your EAD is a LIST A document for work purposes and the I-9 form (google it!), which you will have to fill out once being hired. You can leave the number open until you know it but you should be able to get it within a week.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

27th July i walked into the local social security office and applied for a social security number. They gave me a letter to confirm this.

Todays date...29th August. I still have no social security number.

We have requested a second time for a social security number to be issued. We were told by the same social security office, they cant issue a number yet.

I cant describe to you how frustrating this is. Im sure you can imagine.

My new job is supposed to start in September. Due to the nature of my work i have to be background checked etc etc.

My new employer is meeting up with me this Wednesday, when we plan to do the notary stuff. Cant do though, since no social security number.

We had postponed until this Wednesday because i was assured by lots of different people i would be sitting stroking my social security number by now.

Trying real hard to keep my composure. Yet i cant help but cast my mind back to London, England in August of 2010 when a US Embassy consular officer told me that they dont like shirkers in America.

Give me a freaking social security number and i wont shirk..How simple is that?!

Now if anyone can tell me what the heck i should do now to be in with the slightest chance of being issued with a social security number. I would be most grateful.

At least you got a combo card, we have both card and paper AP. SSS will take about a week or so.

Hmmm

You may want to go back to the SS office and have then look into it. It should have arrived within a week.

Uhu we did go back. Infact, we went back today...
