Help me understand please. :star:

Israel/ US alliance = "God of War?"

I mean, I understand some of the reasons for Afghan and Iraq.

What's the benefit of the US/Israel alliance other than weapon sales?

The argument is that if we went to the pre 67 boarders that Israel couldn't defend itself. Considering Israel's military capabilities I have a hard time believing that. Does anybody have some insight into this?

It would make it harder.

And more to the point, what benefit is there to Israel of rolling back its borders to 1967?

Peace? Much of the Arab opposition is to the very existence of Israel.

I do think Israel has an opportunity to put itself back in a good light Internationally without giving up a thing. I have no faith in the Palestinian leadership.

Basically I would enter into talks with the new coalition government (now that Hamas is "accepted" again). Basically make a goal for the 1967 borders to occur by 2025. Start by confirming the settlement freeze, then begin the legal process of pulling back Israeli settlements from the West Bank with the goal of 50% being removed by 2018. 100% by 2022 and then the Golan Heights by 2025. Place a goal of ending the gaza blockade by 2014 etc.

Put these terms next to an agreed Hamas ceasefire. My guess is that while there will be initial agreement, Hamas would start launching attacks again with 12 months canceling the agreement snd putting Israel ahead in the PR war (which is real war).

i think it has more to do w/ the UK & US being responsible for Isreal's geographic location than anything else.

I think ultimately, the sticking point of any attempt at a peace settlement is going to be Jerusalem.

I bet even if Israel threw the 2000 divide into the agreement, it wouldn't stop Hamas being Hamas, don't you think?

It would give Israel more credibility world wide. Hey theres that word again.

Yes true but if they cant make this about the boarders then it becomes all about the destruction of Israel. When the talks becomes all about the destruction of Israel Hamas will lose some support.

Also it seems like way too many people assume that going to the 67 boarders is a attempt to negotiate/work with the Hamas, with me its more about the rest of the world. Any sort of sit down talks with Hamas I wouldn't support.

_Simpson_ is typing. Everyone be quiet and prepare to be amazed!

You're just a grumpy old man aren't you?

Borders, not boarders, O Great Director of Intellectual Capital.

And I do think you're being naive. At one time the debate was predominantly about about the destruction of Israel and even then their only friends in the world were the United States and the UK.

I agree with Simpson. Make the agreement that you know Hamas will break, when they break it, blame them (and Obama too if they want). At the end of the day its a game.

Hamas has already broken plenty of agreements. Put the lives of all Israelis at risk to prove a point?

At the end of the day its a game.

It is. Israel has nothing to lose from the status quo.
