Hi guys. I am writing about Inter-marriages and its affect on children for my Psychology class. I need to write a 7-10 page paper and I think I'm running out of ideas :crying:. Do you have anything to share like, how do kids handle differences in language, religion, food etc? Who has more authority or who do they go to when something bothers them? How does friends and relatives of each side affect them? Do they think they're "different"?

Thank you in advance. :)

Not that I have a child (nor does my fiancé)... but I assume that the relationship has benefits for the child as well... your questions seemed 'negative'. And I don't mean that in a bad way, I just mean, does the marriage open their eyes (so to speak). A lot of discussions here mention age gaps, different religions, different races, etc. Possibly you could mention that, in addition to so many negatives (that certain individuals might notice), there are also positives (lbeing bi-lingual, expanding ones taste in foods, presenting the possibility of different religions).

Again, not that I know what you've wrote or intend to write, but I would include both sides to everything... child struggling to communicate - learning the language (on own or by/with spouse) - result: better communication with spouse as well as development of friends at school/wherever due to new language.

I am however, of no assistance as to actually answering your questions, due to my lack of children. Lol. Sorry. :-/

Thank you. Didn't mean to be negative..That's what I intend to present, both negative and positive effects of having 2 different-cultured parents.

You are looking specifically for "Inter-What" Relationships/Marriages?

Inter-Racial, Inter-Cultural, Inter-Class/Cast...

There are a lot of ways to read your request. FWIW, Inter-Racial & Inter-Cultural are not the same thing even though they often times exist side-by-side.

The only thing I have observed, is that the children seem to adopt the culture of their peers once they begin attending school, tempered by what they see on TV. I observed that in adopted children, and in interracial households. The children seem to adapt much faster than their parents.

I guess you could call me an inter child, hehe. My mom is Japanese and my dad is Haole or white. I grew up in Hawaii and had no real problems. But Hawaii is the state with most inter marriages in the union so it is excepted here. But in Hawaii the kids adopt the local culture and don't consider themselves white. In the mainland I guess they adopt the local culture that surrounds them, which is more white. But it is not bad to be hapa or half white.

I think you are going to find it isn't even relevant until someone from the outside makes it so. A child does not consider themselves "different" unless someone instructs them that they are.

So it seems to me a more productive question is how a bigoted environment affects children. Because it simply is not relevant otherwise. I can't think how it would be different if our kids were born out of a caucasian womb.

We can't decide that there have to be major differences when there are none. That is a legitimate research result. Both of us are human and there is only one race actually - the human race.

It has been scientifically proven if your parents didn't have children, you won't either.

hmm, interesting thread... I have children and they hvae been exposed to other cultires, other races. just something which happens. I think the rel key is ehre is the aactual culture and residing location. Many marriages which you might consider "inter-cultural" in fact are not. Those who seem of different cultures, actually grew up in the same value system. Same types of way of being raised. However, where they reside is different then the culture you would expect them to have. For example, an irishman growing up in Egypt marrying someone from UK, or protestant christian growing up in the Philippines marrying someone from America, you might consider this an inter-cultural marriage. But in fact it is not. It a cultural alignment marriage where similar people have grown up with similar values even though this would not be expected from the areas of residing. the cultural background of the family outweighs the residing areas culture, even in children. Children adopt the society they live in. However, children also adopt and accept more the cultural norms of their parents. All kids are outsides, as well as insiders at the same time. Children exposed to inter-cultural marriages or raised in inter-cultural marriage tend to fare better in the "global" world then those jsut raised in America. Those who are exposed to many different cultures, see the different ways of living. They may be rejects in school, but once going into the workforce, they are mose socially accepts since they are adapt at adjusting between cultures.
