Daniels Decides Against Presidential Run

OB-NZ739_prezra_D_20110522022129.jpg

By NEIL KING JR.

After months of stewing and despite widespread encouragement from many within his party, Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels sent out an e-mail to supporters early Sunday saying he had decided against jumping into the 2012 presidential race.

The decision is sure to disappoint the governor's many supporters, among them several prominent Republican governors who thought Mr. Daniels's deep résumé and record as cost-cutter in Indiana would add ballast to the 2012 GOP field.

In the end, he said, the decision came down to family. "I was able to resolve every competing consideration but one, but that, the interests and wishes of my family, is the most important consideration of all," he said in an e-mail sent after midnight.

Mr. Daniels, a two-term governor who had worked the administrations of both George W. Bush and Ronald Reagan, had often expressed concerns about the strains a national campaign would put on his wife and four adult daughters.

His decision to stay out of the race eliminates one of the last big Republicans still known to be eyeing a presidential campaign and rounds out a week that also saw two other well-known figures— Mike Huckabee and Donald Trump—take their names out of contention.

"If I have disappointed you, I will always be sorry," Mr. Daniels wrote. "If you feel that this was a non-courageous or unpatriotic decision, I understand and will not attempt to persuade you otherwise. I only hope that you will accept my sincerity in the judgment I reached."

In classic Daniels fashion, the governor ended his note with a bit of self deprecation. "Please stay in touch if you see ways in which an obscure Midwestern governor might make a constructive contribution to the rebuilding of our economy and our republic," he wrote.

He could never win a GOP primary. Comments from the FreeRepublic.com thread on Mitch dropping out pasted below.

Sorry. Not buyin’ it. He saw how “wishy washy” is playing out with Newt, Huckabee etc.

*****

Man, really thought he had a shot. </sarcasm>

*****

He’s a great governor....but he’s just not presidential material.

*****

This race is not for the weak. I bellieve that Mitch was vunerable and he knew it.

*****

THANK GOD!

WE WANT SARAH!

WE WANT SARAH!

WE WANT SARAH!

*****

Good. We need a warrior not a negotiator.

*****

good riddance!

*****

Don’t the door hit you in the ........! 18 stitches

*****

No Bush acolytes this time please.

*****

Uh oh. Krauthammer probably organizing a search committee for another RINO even as I type.

*****

I’m thinking they’ll start whispering Jeb Bush’s name again.

Or perhaps double down on “drafting” Christie into the race.

Both are non-starters in my view.

To win the republican nomination for president

a candidate needs three things:

1-Very good name recognition

2-Proven top fundraising ability

3-Proven electoral success (has won a state wide general election)

Only two potential candidates have all three:

Palin and Romney

Everyone else is filler.

*****

Good. He is yet another politician with dubious credentials, small name recognition, and an important job to do where he is.

Defunding Planned Parenthood was a great move. Let him spend the next four years doing stuff like that, and maybe he can run for President at some later date. Let him prove that he can govern and is really conservative, for longer than five minutes.

We need people at the state level and in congress. We don’t need them all running for POTUS and muddying the water.

*****

You have to read between the lines. He didn’t totally rule out accepting a role as a running mate should Biden step down.

*****

Damn. Who will we turn to for mediocrity now?

*****

We’re down one more RINO.

If we can persuade Romney to drop out it will be fun watch Rove and Krauthammer’s heads implode.

*****

Limbaugh ran some devastating sound bites of Daniels last week.

I'd like to think that might pushed this hopeless RINO over the edge.

*****

In looking at the field of potential candidates, Palin, Bachmann, and maybe Cain are the ones who have the fortitude for fight the left headon regarding social issues.

Overall, this is good news for America.

*****

ping for some good news.

*****

But-but-but....the state-run media told us that HE was our best candidate...that HE was the one Obammie and his Commies feared the most!

You know...like they always do, to pick out our worst candidate and ensure they win in a landslide.

Get going, Mr. Get-Along.

We need a fighter, not a nodder.

*****

So who’s up next in the game of RINO whack-a-mole? Maybe ol’ Johnny is up for one more try?

*****

Actually I was hoping Daniels would stay in to split the “moderate” vote with Romney. I'm starting to see the inside the beltway Republicans use words like “inevitable” when talking about Romney and he is quickly becoming the party insider candidate. What I'm worried about is the all the democrat and so-called “independent” crossovers that will vote in open Republican primaries, we may have another McCain shoved down our throats.

*****

Next Job...defeat Romney.

*****

He's a meek Bush-Lugar-McCain insider. His best attribute is that he may sign conservative legislation if you give it to him while he's hiding under his desk.

*****

This will be great news for HERMAN.

*****

I see this as just another RINO, another of the “good ol’ boys” club ducking out at the wishes of the RINO led Republicrat Party in deference to Romney who is THEIR boy.

It’s going to be Sarah versus Romney me thinks.

*****

About 3 years ago a friend of mine heard him speak in Indianapolis. He said at that time he had made a promise to is family not to run because he did not want to put his family through the public scrutiny.

I was surprised at his talk about running.

Interesting that none of your quotes mention Pawlenty or Huntsman, who are rapidly going to emerge as the last credible untainted guys who are actually in the hunt and interested in competing. They're both ex-governors, and could be to 2012 what Bill Clinton (ex Arkansas Gov) was in 1992, coming out of nowhere in an otherwise weak field.

This thread makes me ponder, yet again.....

Just what is the @#%!@% purpose of moderation on this site anyway?? What possible benefit does it provide, or harm does it prevent? I see none whatsoever.

apparently it's to give you something to ponder. :D
