Thought it would be worthwhile starting up a thread that could serve as a forum for travel queries and discussion.

e.g. where does everyone springboard to/from when crossing countries? My fiancee is in South Carolina, so thus far I've been doing a London - New York leg ahead of an internal flight down the East coast (usually La Guardia - Myrtle Beach).

Never sure if there might be a better way, but flights to places like Chicago and Tucson always seem more expensive than NY.

I need any tips I can get at the moment, really. Seems like I'll be looking at a mid-July flight but the summer prices are extortionate - even budget airline Iceland Express' staple flight (Gatwick to Newark via Reykjavik) has been hiked from £140 to £270 (and, in some cases, even £399).

Any advice much appreciated

Obviously London is the obvious choice. However, when I was living in Coventry I flew from Birmingham a few times, as the increased flight cost was offset by only having to pay £3 to get to the airport.

My first stop in the US was generally Newark, although I've also flown via JFK, Canada, DC, and Charlotte. My first trip over was to Texas, but after that my destination was always Richmond: sometimes I would fly to Richmond, other times I would stop in DC (the latter sometimes being a direct flight and sometimes not). Sometimes the extra cost to get to Richmond wasn't worth it, but other times the drive from DC wasn't worth the monetary savings. Whilst I was visiting I was very price conscious, but now that I live here we will probably try to just fly from Richmond in the future :-) I think you have to be open to all the different possibilities: what is best one month may not be the best option next time you travel. My most expensive flight was when I flew in August. We married in July, then had to separate, and I wasn't willing to wait longer for a cheaper flight :-)

It would make sense that New York would be the cheaper route, as it is closer, but sometimes there are cheaper flights going out east. Sometimes.

If I can I always fly to Dallas or LAX, I've gone through other airports before and I find these two make life that bit easier

I also tend to book direct with America Airlines, and I'm hoping to have earnt enough loyalty miles to pay for my one way ticket out there with them as a result.

I usually buy direct from the airline's web sites.. however...

In February when I moved from the UK to the US, I got a great deal off STA Travel's web site for a one way ticket (LHR - LAX) that was just over 200 pounds. The same ticket if I would have purchased off BA's website was £900 something.

My fiance's moving in June and his ticket was around £320, LHR - LAX. Again - used STA.
